Yes I would certainly experiment with mutts first. We did, and some eggs a friend sent me for free. That gives you some time to figure it all out before you spend money on eggs. I am not yet going to spend money on eggs til I have a decent hatch and get all the bugs worked out.

2nd batch wasnt much better I ordered way too may eggs for my 42 eggturner and put in 56 ontop of eachother....I "think" I had well over 100$ in eggs in there and got about a buck twp ninty eighth's worths of chicks out! lol...3rd hatch was a charm and got 20 something chicks out.

See, I think the first few hatches are a crap shoot. We are learning, getting to know the bator, etc. I think I am aware of what went wrong before and really hoping for a good hatch.

OP - read up on dry hatches. I am gonna try this because I think the high humidity did mine in.

I love dry hatching I got 20/23 3 weeks ago and the 3 that didnt hatch made it to the very end but got shrink wrapped or drowned in egg while pipping?

Dry hatches, is that the 35% humidity for the first 18 days?

You have all convinced me to use my flock's own eggs for the first hatch or two - thank you for saving me lots of money, worry and grief!!

As you can see, most of us posting are still trying to get the hang of it ourselves!!! There are plenty of threads about dry hatching, I think it is more like 20% but don't take my word for it.

OMG. My first hatch 4 out of 20 eggs. I totally freaked out and OPENED the bator when they pip'ed! I have now learned. My second hatch - i got 9 out of 20 - I tried a "dry" incubation - didnt work great for me - Im in lockdown on my third hatch and so far i have 18 out of 22 eggs hatched! Its amazing cuz this hatch has gone thru hell and they are still hatching and the others went thru no trauma (expect the first ones) . I am still learning and am still so nervous during lockdown - and am DIEING to help them all break out of their shells. .... SO HARD....
