Naturally acid soil. Most hydrangeas react to the acidity of the soil. Because our soil is so acid I do not do anything special and they are deep blue. The hard part for me is if I want pink. I'd have to use a lot of lime and do it each year.
Determined to have a pink one at least 1 time in my life. I rooted some cuttings and put them in miracle grow potting soil in a half barrel. Beautiful pink blooms! Problem was, it was hard to keep it moist in a pot in the awful heat of our summers.
I gave up.
So thankfully I am happy with blue.
A lot less work for me!
Edited to add Thank you very much!

), and it's probably my best flower garden yet. The creeping phlox is just starting to fade now but other flowers are coming!! There's creeping phlox, garden phlox, hostas, perennial geraniums, irises, speedwell, astilbe, mini daffodils, and pansies.
