My mother has, and I have reused both the foam and cardboard egg cartons. It never really occurred to me not to, or that there could be any problem with it. I have been selling at a local farmer's market (live plants), the guy that is always beside me is getting ready to sell his chicken eggs. We were discussing the reused egg cartons, and he was concerned with them. I kinda scoffed at him about it, until I listened to his side of things and gave it some more thought...

He does a few different markets, and some of them REQUIRE him to have liability insurance, in the event a customer becomes ill from a product that you sold them and it's traced back to the market. With all the egg contamination issues that have been prevalent in commercial egg distribution, he is VERY apprehensive about using cartons that have had those eggs in them. You can't completely sterilize styrofoam or cardboard cartons, and you can't know that the carton you are reusing did or didn't have a contaminated product in it. It takes one lawsuit to leave a small business destitute, or at the very least unable to insure themselves and do business.

I understand his concern. We tend to hold retailers to a different standard than we do the guy down the road that sells a few dozen eggs a week.
