hi guys

ive got a chinese silke that has a pretty bad case of scaly leg mites happening.

The white crust, Lifting and awkward looking large scales...
one foot is swollen larger than the other one.

anyhow, i couldnt beleive it slip past me without me noticing it.

ive begun treatment yesterday... ive done alot of reading about treatments especially this forum.

however, im not coping very well with this myself... i feel itchy all over looking at it.

can this type of mite move to a human host?... i forgot to wear gloves whilst dipping its feet in the oil.
(obviously now on i will)
what i meant is.... can it move under a humans finger nails or gaps at the side of the finger nail and start attacking the same way since to some extent....simillar area?

man i been itching thinking about this for over 24 hours now......

(also? how often do should i do it? im trying the Kerro and Veggie oil... did one treatment yesterday... i guess twice a week?)
thanks in advance people

The mites are not able to live on humans. They are also embedded deep under the scales on the bird, so they cannot get under your fingernails. Be sure to treat any other birds you might have.

I've used Vicks vapor rubs on the legs, and apply it every five to seven days and keep in routine maintaince on it. You would also need to treat the roosts too, veggie oil would help out. I am sure others can chime in.

Oh most chicken lice and mites are host specific so its all in your head that you re itching LOL!

After you get done with the birds, just go in and take a good shower and you will be fine.

hey there
thanks for the replies

yeah its all in my head... just whenever i thnk or see it....goosebumps stick up straight away

well ive done one kerro+oil treatment 2 days ago, she seems to be walking.... (results and symptoms cant be that quick can it??)

its funny that the other 2 hens dont have any mites..... just this chinese silkie.... and they are in the same coop

i know pests can affect ALL avian birds... especially leg mites....

but it seems like a breed is more prone to one thing?

the 3 ive got:

*Silkie - Seems to be prone to Leg mites (since shes the only one thats got it)
*Isa Brown - ALWAYS..and i mean ALWAYS seems to get lice (even when others dont have it)
*New Hampshire Red - Never seems to have any problems...

hmmmm
