Hi everyone. I am just starting to research getting some chickens. We have recently bought .35 acre and live in Caldwell ID where they allow up to 10 chickens! My hubby and I started out as farmers 30 years ago in Iowa on 300 acres and raised pigs and cows. We sold the farm about 20 years ago and have lived overseas since. We are now back in the US and "empty nesters" and so are looking forward to having a few animals again. We currently have 1 Mongolian herding dog that came home with us from our last post overseas. At this point I hoping to start our little hobby farm next spring but am gathering as much info between now and then. Some of my other interests include cooking, and knitting and spinning ( and so I also am seeing some fiber animals in our future as well :) )

Have you visited our sister sites yet? www.SufficientSelf.com has some nice discussions on small scale farming and www.BackYardHerds.com on other types of farm animals. Enjoy your farm and your new ventures!

Drumstick Diva, I have been checking into that as well. I like the Navajo Churro sheep and a mini Jersey cow would round out our little farm nicely. I think I need more land though for the cow and sheep so for now will maybe just go with a few chickens and a nice garden :)
