Zane... An Update for Those Interested

avian vet (just this morning) said that even if full muscle and nerve regeneration doesn't happen, if we can get the toes uncurled and keep them relatively flat, he can still use the foot for balance and let the other leg do most of the weight bearing. Would it be the same for Zane?

Yes, I think so. He was previously doing just that, before we were aware that he had no feeling in the foot. And you know, I had the same thought about the pride thing-I really dont know what Zane feels or wants from this. Quality of life is something we cant really decide for someone else, however, we are in that very position with our animals. It's a tough thing, to decide if he wants to live in his present condition. Then, there's the issue, selfish as it may be, of wondering if we can do everything for crippled Zane every day for as long as he lives. That could very well be years and years. If he belonged to someone else, someone more, well, pragmatic about all this, then he would have met the axe five months ago. I think my hope is that he'll be able to get around, using his dead foot as a crutch, and maybe have conjugal visits from some of his ladies who seem to really like him. It still leaves me with having to construct a special coop for him to live in. I dont think the dog kennel is the best place for him, day in and day out, for years on end.
Jill! Good to see Zane's older sister! That's interesting information about the nerves regenerating. Sure hope that happens for Zane. Hug Lily for me!

For some stupid reason I just now saw this post. (no comments please) LOL
I hope Zane is going to pull thru this and be his old self. I'm sure you will try your best to see that this is how it turns out!

We have a disturbing development here with Zane. I thought I was seeing things the other day, but my DH mentioned it to me this morning. Zane's bad leg is gray. It's not yellow like the other one. There is a distinct color difference. I'm afraid the leg is dying. I've put in a msg to Doc Brown to get his take on it, but sadly, this may be the end of the road. Spotted Crow has likened Zane's injury and my own dad's injury to each other and I'm afraid there may be more truth to that than we all realized. Dad's leg was amputated a couple of months ago when they couldn't get circulation back in it. I hate to think all the attention was for nothing with my Zane.

Whether you lose him now or not, all the attention and effort was NOT for nothing. It was for honoring your commitment to him, it was for giving him the best care you could, it was for giving him the best life that you could. NONE of that is "nothing".

Hang in there!
