I just wanted to share some pics of what is, in my opinion, the best boy in the entire world. His name is Zeus, he's a 9 month old Bielefelder cockerel, and he's a total lap chicken. He follows me around everywhere I go, and he's the sweetest and friendliest male I've ever owned, not to mention my favorite chicken ever (and I've had a lot of chickens). So, without further ado, I give you Zeus!!

Checking out the camera:

Wondering why Mom isn't snuggling him:

He's wonderful. He's an excellent flock guard, is sweet to everyone, including my 2 year old daughter who tries to pick him up even though she can't. But, he lets her try. I have never loved a chicken this much. I didn't even know they could be this snuggly and friendly. He likes kisses, too :love So, that's the story of my beloved Zeus, the greatest chicken who ever lived (in my humble opinion). Feel free to worship him ;)

I bought two pullets with him, and paid $50 for all 3 (a great deal, since they're from greenfire parents), but both girls have since been killed, and I'm super sad that I'll have to wait to get more of this wonderful breed. The girls were very similar to him, though not quite as friendly, but they would let me pet them and hold them without a fuss. I have a Cream Legbar hen that I just got, but no male, so I'm considering using her to breed to him for super sweet, auto-sexing, green egg layer babies. As soon as she decides to start laying again after her move here (I've only had her for 3 weeks), that is. Do you think that's a good plan til I get him his own girls?

yes.

Yeah, but they're all in an enclosed yard. The birds I've lost (about 20 this year) were all due to what I believe was either a raccoon or opossum. They were reaching thru the chicken wire at night and in the early AM and grabbing birds by the head and killing them. I lost a lot of excellent birds...i fixed the problem since then, but I'm still terrified of losing any more.

Thank you. I agree. He's pretty much the best. He talks back to me in his sweet little cooing voice whenever I talk to him. It's the sweetest sound. And yes, losing birds is hard. I lost my entire pen of blue Ameraucanas to that darn beast, and so am gonna have to start all over again with them in the spring, which is disappointing. My blue girls were my favorite girls I ever had, aside from my speckled Sussex girls, who were amazing, too. I hate losing chickens. I plan on building my new coops on the new farm out of cob, as it's so secure and cheap to build with. I will sleep a lot more soundly once my cob coops are done. I can't wait to get started on them.
