Do you also keep broiler chickens and how do you do it. For us we slaughter after 6 weeks and free range 6 months
Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. When we raise meat chickens, we use Cornish cross, and butcher them at 8 weeks. Due to their abnormal growth rates, they typically weigh around 8 lbs. at that time. If we wait much beyond 8 weeks to butcher them, they begin to develop health problems due to their unnatural growth rates. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your farm.

Cornish cross (also known as Cornish X and Cornish Rocks) are hybrids produced by crossing Cornish roosters with White Plymouth Rock hens, resulting in offspring that are the most remarkable meat producing chickens in the world. It's one of the interesting quirks of hybridization. Cornish cross quickly develop broad breasts, big thighs, white plumage, and yellow skin. The rapid growth of Cornish cross chickens is abnormally fast and their feed efficiency is remarkable. Cornish cross will typically reach about 8 lbs. in 8 weeks. As I said in my earlier post, if allowed to go much beyond 8 weeks, they begin to develop health problems due to their abnormal growth rate. I have posted a picture of a Cornish cross below.
