Hi all,

I'm gearing up to build a coop and just double-checked with our Township since last I checked was in 2013, to make sure nothing has changed in terms of chickens being allowed where we live. Still OK to have them. However this time they mentioned needing a Zoning Permit for the building/structure the chickens will be in. I took a look at it and boy do you need a lot of info to fill it out and $50 to get it! Anyone else deal with this? We're only wanting 5-6 chickens.

I'm not too concerned and kinda regret saying anything. Neighbors I talked to so far are cool with it. I doubt folks putting in a dog house have to deal with this.

Thanks

My township has a 200 sq ft requirement. Meaning if what you're building is gonna be bigger than 200 sq ft than you need a permit. Just about anything under that size and no permit is required.

Thanks for the input! I had read that 200 sq ft somewhere else as I've Googled around like crazy. Trying to find it in our local codes and it's a pain. Hoping I'll be fine as long as neighbors are.

Still digging through dense township codes... So far, I've found a line noting that any accessory structure, including sheds, needs to have a zoning permit prior to being erected. No mention of coops by name or square footage anywhere! The Agriculture section is totally geared towards large, production structures and land use.

This is frustrating.

Do you know whats crazy... the town can google earth and see your property from the sky. I think every year you can see a new picture. They don't even have to leave the building to see what you have on your property. It's just an easier way for them to collect more money. Sad but true.
(Btw 20 years ago I would of laughed at what I just written.look at how it's changed.... )
I think a 12x12 coop wouldn't be a problem or atleast a safe size. The problem you may have is putting it on a cement slab. IMO this is ridiculous but hey there's a price tag on everything ! Good luck investigating, sometimes trying to do the right thing opens up the wrong doors.
