I've always loved Indian runner ducks and my kids have always ran to see them
at the fall fair. We have been thinking of getting one or two to live with our chickens.
Are there any problems with them living together. I've heard the ducks can eat layer feed.
Is this a good combination or will...
I have an Australorp cross who has always laid extremely thin shelled eggs that always have small calcium build ups all over one end. I've always thought if the shell is thick enough to hold the egg then I guess it is ok. For the past month she has only laid broken eggs. Lately she has been in...
I would put fake eggs in your boxes or any frozen eggs
In the spot you want them to lay. My EE likes to adjust the
Shavings in the nesting box for no reason....she's not laying yet....
But she will often kick the golf ball out of the box. Of course
All the eggs are then layed on the floor...
So....... I've got 6 great hens of which 2 are laying. They have taken to making a fair
Bit of noise some mornings. Will this noise get increasingly worse or will they
quiet down a bit once they have been laying for a while. My neighbors are good
With a bit of noise but I'm sure if it gets...
@ Fred's Hens
I just read your home page and was very impressed with your thoughts and your knowledge about chickens. In the time since you posted on my topic and now I was able to go outside and experience watching one of my hens lay an egg.(for the first time!) Besides the fact that a...
So, I have 1 out of 6 hens laying right now. They are all in and and around 24 weeks old. I have lights inside my coop and outside in the run.
I turn my coop light on at 4:30am and then turn my run lighting on at 5:45am when the pop door opens.
The run lighting turns off at 10:00 am when it...

My one that just started laying didn't get that memo, so far her eggs are uniform in colour, size, and shape. And here I was almost hoping for some eggy oddities.
The eggs I've been getting have been near perfect. Even the first one!
Of course I've got 5 other hens that still have...
SO HERE IS A COUPLE OF EGGS I'VE GOTTEN OVER THE PAST TWO DAYS
CAN A SINGLE HEN LAY TWO DISTINCTIVELY DIFFERENT COLOR EGGS OR IS THIS TWO DIFFERENT HENS AT WORK?
I JUST STARTED GETTING EGGS LAST WEEK
I STILL HAVEN'T GOT MORE THAN 1 EGG A DAY
THE LIGHTER TINT EGG IS FROM THIS MORNING!

I took your advice and checked my hens....much to their dismay.... and figured out which one was laying. It was really easy
to tell. Thank you for the advice everyone!
Anyone have any tricks as to find out who is laying eggs? I am trying trying to figure out
which hen is responsible. Will she be acting differently than the others? Besides catching her in the act
are there any other techniques?
She is also laying eggs right beside the nesting box. 6" up...

Congrats on your first eggs! we are waiting for our first eggs to arrive here.
How old are your chickens? Mine just turned 20 weeks.
I think I only have 1 hen out of 6 laying and in think she is 21 weeks
Good luck to you and your ladies!
Sorry for the illusion......they are my 3 year old daughters hands.
The eggs are about a small-medium size. My wife just finished making oatmeal cookies with them!
