We lost our first chicken tonight. We have (had) 8 hens about 6-8 months old, and two small bunnies in a 12 X 12 coop with a 16 X 10 fully enclosed run. Everyone has been getting along fine. Kids went out to close the coop for the the night, and came back in to say they thought there was...
Finally, pics of our finished coop. We have 4 girls right now, and hoping to get 4-8 more. Also have space in the coop for our two Rabbits.
Love the poop board with the PDZ. Clean-up is so easy.
The chickens have decided not to use the nesting boxes, and are laying in the shavings on the...
Finally, Chicken coop is ready for chickens. Hoping to get them this week. They weren't in on Saturday as planned. We will be starting out with 8-10 six month old chickens. Yes that is a rabbit in the corner. We just got two little bunnies for the kids. We had planned on giving them their...
So we are getting ready to get some chickens this week, and just got two young bunnies today. Had thought about putting the rabbit hutch in the run, or even in the coop - 12X12.
Right now the bunnies have the run of the coop, so another idea was to section off a 4X4 area for the bunnies...
That is my question too. We just built a 12X12 raised coop. I am not sure that I want the weight of sand. What are other options? Getting chickens on Saturday (5-6 month old hens).
We will likely have to ad ventilation, but during the summer seems like less if a problem than the winter because of the windows. There is a lot of room to add Soffit vents - the overhang is 1 ft on the sides. We also aren't packing the coop with chickens - It is a 12x12 coop for 12 chickens.
Sorry - Added location to profile, but we are in Eastern NC (Grifton area), so mild winters (hardly ever any snow or temps below freezing), summers are humid, and hot 90's +.
Predators we have in the area - 4 bald eagles about 600 feet from our barn yard, owl, raccoon, fox, our dog, possibly...
We do plan to use the area under the coop. Will be leaving run area as is with a corner as you describe. Eventually we will have a larger fenced yard around the run so that the chickens can be out while we are around - can't let them completely free range because of our dog.
Ventilation...
Getting closer to being done. A little more trim work, then to the inside and the run...Trying to decide how to do the run now. We are starting with a 10 ft X 20 ft run. Question: What is the best material to use for the run?
