    Rottweiler & Chickens

Good to see!!! You can see my one Rottie with a chick in my avatar. They are best friends. I have worked with Rotts for 25 years. Good working lines are not something just sold at the local breeder. Working lines aren't given or sold to novices. Working Rotts are something that are...

A little Easter treat for the girls. I went out with the mower and bagged a bunch of field grass. Got a huge pile in their run and boy oh boy they are in heaven!

    Good dog, close call!

I have a pure bred Rottweiler. She is awesome with the chicks. My avatar photo is from when she was about a year old with the chicks. She was in that weird looking stage. Now she looks like a rott. LOL.

    Good dog, close call!

Oh yes absolutely! She loves them so much. Every time we let her out, she runs straight to the chickens. When they see her they start making noise. When we let the chickens out to forage, they follow her around the property. It's like the Pied Piper.

    Good dog, close call!

Wow, that's a good pooch! My old dog did that to someone who broke into my shed. Hehehe. There is something about a dog protecting its domain that is really awesome.

    Good dog, close call!

As if coyotes aren't enough. The dog was at the back door barking but it wasn't a normal bark. It was more frantic and intense. I saw something flopping out where the field meets the garden, so I grabbed the shotgun and ran out. As I turned the corner to flank whatever it was, I look in the...

What bedding do you prefer to use in your coop?

We used hay for a quite a while since we cut it on our property. Now we use pine shavings. I think it is just easier to deal with and easier to keep clean. We use it in the nesting boxes and on the floor.

    integration went like a breeze...

I thought the title was 'interrogation' there for a second. I was ready to see chicken under heat lamps with blindfolds on. Glad everything went well and they didn't have to get waterboarded.

Just slaughtered my first chicken. Sad :(

Sounds like you were a friend all the way. As someone who has had to put down their best friend in the world more than once, I can tell you, it never gets easy. This is a good thing. I love my animals and try my best every day to give them a healthy and happy life as long as I can. As soon...

They like some shade and like a 6-7.0 pH. I don't think they would do too good under a pine tree, but I bet blueberries probably would. The reason blueberries don't grow well here is they need acidic soil, much like what is found under well established pine trees here in CO. Sorry for the...

Why are you staring at my beak?

They are kind of tart and have a very slight floral flavor. Maybe like a tart/sour grape. We had green ones. They were good and I will plant one at this house next year. The size of mine were probably twice the size of a pea? The shrub got about 3 feet tall and was probably 6 feet across.

    The Buckeye Thread

Just wanted to drop in and say hi. We are in Northern Colorado and have 2 Buckeye girls that are my personal favorites! They are so sweet, funny and smart. Thanks for sharing all the info! If I can find a Buckeye rooster, I think I am gonna scoop him up. Absolutely love this breed.

I had gooseberries at my old house. They were on the north side of a slatted fence. We never watered them, or took care of them in any way. They thrived.

are your dogs and chicken friends

Ours has been really good with the chicks since the beginning. Now she looks forward to going out each morning to let them out. She will go out and sit by the door to the coop.
