Legal Elimination of Hawks and Owls

So today I came home and went to visit the chickens. Was doing my thing and cleaning the pen when I heard rustling in the yard by the fence. Thought it was a large groundhog but went to check it out. Turns out it was a huge hawk. I ran at it to scare it and it wouldnt move. Realized at this...

Advice on Introducing 2 new silkies to existing silkie flock

Coop is built and we put them in it at night, but the run has not been sectioned off yet so they are still with the original flock. We are building the separation fence this week which will force the older silkies to seperate from the flock. I guess I can build a small temp pen inside of...

Advice on Introducing 2 new silkies to existing silkie flock

I have read quite a few articles on introducing new chickens...which are great. I have a slightly unique situation and wanted some advice. Set-up: I currently have a large flock (36) of mix breeds and silkies around 7-8 months old. This was great until the cold hit and I realized we needed...

    Easter Egger club!

That's definitely a blue Amerucana with something. I had a hard time telling my Ameraucana/morans apart from the pure until some of their neck color came in too. Mine have more of a redish color.

    Easter Egger club!

Here are my eggs from yesterday. 11 of my 33 hens laid...I think around 15-17 or so of my hens are laying and the rest are still being stubborn. (Just hatched this last spring). I seem to get a new one every few days now. I have Ameracucana, olive eggers, Easter eggers, copper marans...

How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

11 eggs today from 33 hens. 2 of my silkies are broody and the other hens are just getting to laying age...every few days I get a new egg color. Here's today's 11.

    The Olive-Egger thread!

I just started getting slightly larger than silkie sized olive eggs from our petite olive egger. She is a golden color and one of my smaller hens. I think her eggs are adorable, but waiting for the rest of them to start laying and hoping my blue egg layers get with the program. I want to make...

    silkie sexing

I've given up on sexing mine. Luckily (or maybe not lucky), a few of my 6-7 month olds have started crowing so I can rule them out of the pullet running. I do have 2 that are laying and am not quite sure which ones. I did see a rooster mount my (paint?) colored one so I'm guessing a she...same...

    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

So I'm about to forage into this FF world. About a year ago I got organic apple cider, put it in 2 carboys added yeast and let it go...and go...and go. (Life got in the way of hard cider) Needless to say I now have two 5 gallon carboys with what must be vinegar (I'll smell it tonight). If so...

    Growing fodder for chickens

No, my fault. I didn't specify what I meant by feed. I just assumed pellets = chicken feed, lol. Reading some more I realized others call anything feed. (I call everything else by grain name). Anyhow, hoping it all goes well and the birds like it :-)

    Growing fodder for chickens

The feed that they get is layena pellets. That is what I planned on fermenting and is noted in the $15 per bag price. (Based on all the reading I have done that says you can ferment their feed). They would be getting the same nutrients they always get, just now in fermented form or in grown...

    Growing fodder for chickens

So here is my math...but I may be way off on my estimates: 1. I think I have ~30 chickens (when you have that many and they are the kids...you really stop trying to count and just say "I have too many".) I just buy the food when they are low so the following are guestimates on my current...

    Growing fodder for chickens

So quick question. (I've read about 100 pages and figured it was quicker to ask): I called around and can get the grain for the following prices (I live closer to DC so I would need to travel further to get better prices). Which is best or would you go with if you can get these seeds for this...

    A treatise on Electric Fencing

Thanks for the info :-) it's my fence, butts up to mostly woods on their side. Only issue with putting it on the ground over there is all the leaves, branches, and weeds. (Literally a forest back there). Maybe what I will do is the top fence lines like you said then run a low wire on the inside...
