Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

    1. The baby birds peck at moms poop which inoculates them naturally against cocci 2.I give everybody starter and provide extra calcium. I don't do medicated feed and have never lost a bird, and they free range.

Any one want to join me in waiting for eggs, posting and comparing notes?

Sorry I didn't see the other question. Mama hen lays blue/green eggs. She is a bantam but her eggs about the size of a medium store egg.

They are mutts:) The mama hen is a silkie/phoenix mix. She is not their biological mama though. The eggs came from my sister and are at least partially silkie and phoenix with the possibility of barred rock and auracana. The black one has two barred patches and beautiful cinnamon rims on her...

Thought I would share my circle of life here. Way back when I was waiting for my one and only hen out of a hatch of 6 to lay. Now she is a mama! Here are her two chickies(and my chicken whisperer daughter). I'm hoping at least one of these babies is a girl. Hermia and the chicks she hatched(not...

    Poopie Butt

Not trying to start anything but while that it is true that pastuerized ACV is acidic and will strip the gut of beneficial bacteria the opposite is true of raw unfiltered ACV with the "mother" in it. Because it is fermented it contains the benificial flora and will help to colonize the gut...

Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

My two hen raised chicks are so much more vigorous and burly at 3 weeks than any of the ones we brooded ourselves. And since my daughter spends time every day in the chicken tractor with them they are pretty friendly. The funniest thing is that they fly EVERYWHERE! And chase mama down for a...

Thanks for the reassurances. I think I will leave her alone and check around for some fertile eggs. One a different note. I am LOVING having a mama hen take care of babies. Not only do I not have the all day long cheeping(which is cute but gets SO loud) in the house but man these chickies are a...

Has anyone had success with sex links going broody? One of my black sex links has decided to go broody now that my other hen has chicks. I've read other people had them not stay broody because of the breed. I've been trying to break her of it, but every day since Hermia started taking care of...

One chick running around, one out but getting itself out of the rest of the membrane and one egg still being set on! These guys were supposed to arrive tomorrow, maybe the temps in the 100's brought them early. Super cute!

So my last broody adventure was a bust but we are back at it and there are 1,000 more posts since the last time my girl sat on a nest, WOW! SO she laid 6 of her own and sat on them-well she actually hid them in under a bush and refused to let me move them. I knew they were not fertile cause the...

My lovely bantam Hermia has begun hiding eggs in the Bouganvillea. Do you have any idea how hard it is to get them without suffering abrasions over most of your body? So we have marked them, candled them, and I will keep checking on them. I am hoping she is just getting a stash together and...
