No citron hamburgs sources from the Hamburg Club as of yet. Rumor has it Mark Langerman in New York, who was listed in the previous Hamburg society breeder webpage...but not the new club yet, has most of the Hamburg varieties but he doesn't have any online presence. Not sure on citron, it...
Can anyone verify whether this is a girl? Sometimes she looks like a pullet to me, sometimes not. She has thick legs and likes to stand tall the majority of the time(like the last photo). She was a little more nervous on the sink then on the floor so not standing so proudly. She is 3 months...
Sorry if this is a basic question at 1000+ pages in to the thread, but what about the basics of the heritage RIR as a backyard flock member? I skimmed through quite a number of pages and it's generally people comparing their birds to the standard. I live reasonably near to one of the well known...
That's why I'd suggest the playpen for general living time. It's big enough for one chicken, and I've found it to be generally cat and dog proof. You could let them out occasionally. In that case, you would be able to use the eggs, you wouldn't have to buy diapers and clean them. Also, since...
There was some discussion awhile back about the Biels eggs having a faint speckled pattern and whether that was a defect. Maybe it's anecdotal, but I've noticed now that my Biel that took 8+ months to develop lays perfectly solid color eggs while the others that started at 6 months lay speckled...
I was choosing from a selection of one month olds that looked essentially the same. So this one should be blue? She's in bright lighting in this photo. Splash would be much lighter and black darker at this point(probably 5 weeks here)? She does have some white in her wings that you can't see...
Hi all,
Can you tell the difference between a splash versus blue chicks right away, or is there a certain age that the final coloration is obvious? Thanks!
My Biels eggs have the same speckles. Fairly confident it's not diet or stress. I've had a few that were without speckles. If you search online for Bielefelder hatching eggs, there are lots of eggs with this pattern. It could be a flaw from breed standards. Here, it just says brown...
You started with one year olds from a large breeder so I wouldn't count on them being friendly as if they were raised and handled often. The eggs are the wrong size and wrong color, and you believe you bought birds with genetic problems and then give them a low rating!
Great Biel rooster story.... I need to move so that I'm allowed to have one.
Maybe I can talk one into not making too much noise! My girls really couldn't be any quieter.

I presume it's that site, which I think is owned by Greenfire, and there's at least a few complaints about it if you search online..but then again there are complaints about everything!
Anyone have a Biel that's slow to laying age, or issues that might cause a delay in laying? I have one that is 8 months+ and not laying. Her comb and wattles are very small, but red. My other two started laying at 6 months.
Well, I did have three! One 8 month old broke it's neck in the coop...
I'd just like to note that Backyard Chickens is a very good source of information in all topics and issues related to chickens.
You can browse through various peoples opinions and then decide what is most accurate for you in your situation.
On the other hand, I would say that there are several...
