Hi. Welcome to my page! Let me start by saying I have no idea what I'm doing! I'm new to the chicken keeping! I got into it because I wanted farm fresh eggs! I want to learn to be more self sustainable, and chickens seemed like a good start. Most people look at me funny when I tell them I have...

    Nevadans?

Hey Nevadans, Sorry I haven't been to active on here. I have a quick question for those of you who live in the Minden, Gardnerville, and Woodfords area. A few nights ago something ripped apart the screens and got into the coop, then stole 3 chickens! And even worse then that, it ate them...

I got some sevin and some no peck. I dusted everyone and everything. All seems well again, and no more feather plucking. I guess it was mites. Thanks for all the advice!

    Pecking at her tail, bleeding?

Thanks for the responses, and the links: I checked her for mites, I looked under her wings, her neck and near her vent. I don't see anything. Would they be visible? She seems to be very itchy, she keeps shaking her head and rubbing her face in the dirt. She was taking alot of dirt baths...

    Pecking at her tail, bleeding?

HI, My light brahma, 14 weeks old (ish), is pecking at her tail and pulling out her feathers, to the point that she made herself bleed. She isn't coming out of the coop and hanging out alone. Whats wrong with her, and what should I do? Thanks!

    Is this good enough?

That's what I used. We had 5 chicks. It lasted about two weeks before they had to move into a hutch, then the "mini coop!" But they were just fine and happy in there. I used so wood shavings and timothy hay as the bedding, but I changed it out every day. Have fun! They grow super fast!

Poor Rosy Hen died!?!?! Not sure why???

Thanks. I hadn't really thought of that. The coop does seem to get a little hot during the afternoons. And she does tend to lay around 10 or 11am. I think it's time for a new screen door and more airflow then....They have 2 windows and a vent, but I never considered the egg laying during the...

Poor Rosy Hen died!?!?! Not sure why???

Hey. So Rosy was only 5-6 months old. She had just started to lay around 2 weeks ago. She laid one, then another two days later. Then none for about a week. She laid again around 6-7 days after the second . Then none again for another 48 hours. The next time there were two eggs. So I figured the...

How long in the coop is too long for an egg?

My girls have decided that laying after 10am is the best time of day for them. But I leave before 8am. So the eggs sit in there all day, until 7ish! Can it go bad if it gets warm in there? Can I still eat them?

    To free range or not?

Thanks for all the responses! My girls have a very large coop, basically a chicken mansion!!! 8'x12' and a semi large covered run 12'x4'. I converted an unused shed into the coop, thats part of the reason it was so big. Plus I was worried about indoor space in the winter since it snows. I...

    Nevadans?

Does anyone know of some local bantam or silky breeders? I would really like to get one or two to add to the flock! I live close to Gardnerville , Carson City, or South Lake Tahoe.
