This thread has died down a bit (crazy hurricane and winter weather :(? ), hoping it will pick up in the spring when it's hatching season!
Our babies are mostly grown now. It's kind of funny, their colors correspond with chubiness level, from super puff (blacks), to medium (quail), to...
Mine are from a local breeder, but I'm not sure where hers came from. Does your runty one look like mine? :) That camera's an old Canon 5D classic. I keep wanting to upgrade, but then...chickens.
That's what I'm afraid of... :hitBut! As long as she/he is peeping strongly and still motoring about, we're going to see if we can keep her up with babying.
On a happier side, of the 5 healthy ones, only 1 looks like a roo. :bow
Has anybody experience with 'dwarfed' d'Anvers? Out of the 6 six chicks that hatched, one pretty much stopped growing at ~3 weeks, has very short legs, and kind of an odd head shape (resembles a baby songbird with oversize beak and angry eyes). She's quite weak and doesn't seem to eat or drink...
Hi,
Set of 3-week old bantam chicks, broody-raised outside.
One baby has been not growing as quickly as the others and is a bit weaker. Its body is on the small side with quite short legs, but its wings and tail are where they should be, so it's weirdly proportioned. Its default mode is...
We went on vacation for a week and a half, came back to one quail guarding her clutch of twelve or so (non-fertile) eggs all piled up in in a depression she'd scratched out. Switched them out for some fertile exotic variety eggs: 17 days later, baby chicks, woo! The other quail in the pen with...
Ok, thanks! We'll keep her separated until we find some (hopefully) friendlier companions. Should they definitely be other coturnix? Or can a smaller species such as button be suitable? I'm worried due to her leg, any hazing by similar sized birds would be rough.
We only have two quail, both female and raised together from the same hatch, and they live together in a 2x4 pen ( in process of building a bigger outdoor area), fed a 27% protein gamebird crumble with mealworms as treats. One of them has become quite broody and started getting extremely...
Is there much hope for shipped eggs with detached air cells? :(
They were bubble wrapped and packaged very well, but the local post office is so hard on mail. The poor eggs spent an extra day longer driving around the neighborhood than they should have. Our two girls have been broody the past...
8/8 all developing as of Day 18, went to check air cells, saw an external pip, freaked out and jacked up humidity for lockdown. Oops. But I can see them rolling around as of today (day 19).
Nah, they were in a plastic box with a dish of water and my incubator tray to keep them upright and easily turned. Transferred eggs to the paper carton when measuring them for easy handling.
Ok, test batch two! 11 days of collection, 10 serama eggs from the same girl. Here is a comparison of air cell sizes for the first and the last:
The oldest egg lost 2 g of weight (from 26g down to 24g) over an 11 day period. All eggs were stored from 60-68F at 85% humidity in a shoebox...
