cluckers&quackers :
My chickens will help themselves to my cats dry food, and seem to love it!! I was wondering why everyone feeds cat/dog food? To help on grain bills or does it have added benefits over the grain? I have only been raising chickens for the past couple of years, and learning as...
Remember what you are attempting to do.
You are trying to replicate the egg's world under a real hen.
She does not have a wide range of temps.
IMHO - your range of heat is too wide.
I am looking for any egg study that reflects the wieght of the egg to the percent of live hatches.
I know not to set really dirty eggs or misshaped ones.
I sell eggs and I sell them by size as dictated by wieght thru the use of a egg scale.
So it got me to thinking do the heavier eggs have...

I have found that some of the dog food they will pick over, except in the coldest of winter days. The Broad Breasted Turkeys I have on the other hand are like pigs with wings.
It should work, I let mine out when I am out side and during the times I work in the garden.
Tip, I learned to water them at the end of the free ranging session, it helps to get all the girls back where they belong.
For about two years during the winter I feed dog and cat food both dry and canned to my chickens. I get it free from a gal that works with Wal-Mart who gives her the out of date/dented/torn bags.
I have not seen any ill effects on the birds nor in the number of eggs they produce.
Looking at...
Should $50 be the top of the range or it the starting point.
I traded chickens for the two hens I have, I valued them at about 20 USD each.
So the price you posted for the Tom is not out of range for my income and willingness.
I am needing to buy a Bourbon Turkey Tom.
I have a line on one from a trusted source, but we have not talked price yet (aka we have not talked turkey), so what say you?
One rooster per pen with 15 or so hens works for me.
I did have my RI in with my WY over the winter they did ok together, just a few flare ups between them.
but who has an idea about how much feed to get a chick from start to 20 weeks or so. "

this might be of some help as I believe you are looking for a per bird breakdown

Don't worry about the temp drop while you help the little one out, the mother does get off the egg for up to twenty minutes a day to poop, pee, eat and drink.
You are just being the hen during that time you have the bator cooling.
I don't (normally) help the chic out of the shell...
Am I picky on this?????"
not at all
My son does the 4H Poultry and the lady that runs it knows her birds.
She will have the kids bring in the birds they plan to show under the club's name and she will DQ a bird without excuse .
She is tough on the kids that try to pass off crap birds and she...
7 new chics in the last 2 days (well last night and this morning) 6 new buffs and one WY.
I am just getting started, I have two more with egg shell dents, and moved 8 more eggs into the still battor this morning.
I hope to have at least 15 by sunday.

As I said, I turned my propane furnace this year.
Katy I too am living in kansas and loving my wood heater. Some days with the wind blowing and the real temp around 10 below it is nice not to hear the propane furnace turning off and on all day with the understanding it was costing me...

I am glad to hear that you are heating with wood.
The independence that comes with heating with wood is priceless.
I have heated with my same wood furnance for about 20 years and it keeps us nice and warm all winter long. I have turned off my propane backup for the first time this...
One I had advertised my add on monarch wood stove before and got no takers, so I posted it on craigs list a month ago and have 3 lookiewookies and one buyer.
The buyer did not haggle over my asking price and came and picked it up the day we talked over the phone, paid in cash, and thank me for...
4boysmom,
I too set my eggs this weekend. I have 48 in the bator and they were set, Fri,Sat, and finished up on Sunday.
We will be on "peep" watch together.
Wishing you the best of hatches.

That is a heck of a mess for some that think they need stuff now before they have cash to buy it.
I paid in cash as I always do for the things I need/want. I will always ask for a cash discount, rarely do I ask the clerk because they don't normally have the power to grant a discount...
