I'm not a chicken or duck pro, but I am a nurse. It looks like it's still infected, didn't get all the infection out. Id re-open the wound or lancet it and try to squeeze/ drain out the remaining infection. Clean the wound well, treat, and cover again.
My open air coop is working well. I have all my original chicks from Meyers. They're all healthy, almost 2 yr old hens now. I did have silkies that had problems with the negative temps last winter and brought them in.
I made a divider in my coop for separate pens. I do tarp the divider in...
If anyone comes across my thread, it was mites. She had a colony right in the top of her tuft of head feathers. I saw two run across her face and thought that was weird. Gave her a bath and found them. I slathered them in Vaseline and treated her with ivermectin. She's now got both eyes...
I've got a silkie who has both eyes shut. They were crusted over yesterday kind of like pink eye. Warm compresses & Vaseline got her eyes open for me to see bubbly/ foamy discharge which I read is a sign of resp. disease like mycoplasma. However, she has no nasal discharge, no rattling, no...
Funny you say that aart. I couldnt get my girls under it either. I had one chick I got under it and she stayed under there for a couple hours but couldnt get the others to go under it. Theyve been using the light all week. :( Its fine since one of us is home, but if we need to go somewhere...
You could use shelf liner over newspaper like I did. I read from others it helps keep them from slipping. I've also seen people put paper towels over their shavings so they don't eat them.
That construction in Polk threw me off a bit. I called Meyers though and they gave me good directions to get around it. Had a good 2 hr drive home. Babies are doing great! Ive been staring at them all night and noticed they love their chests rubbed. Awwwwww so happy.
Good to know they did fine on 83. On high setting we got 93, so we'll see what they prefer. I really dont want to use the heat lamp and thinking I may not have to with this thing.
Im picking mine up from there tomorrow too, weeeeee!
You could put the cardboard up along the sides of the crate to hold on the litter. I put mine up as a barrier against my cats & dogs and then have smaller boxes connected on the inside.
Awesome Aart! My seed mat doesnt get that warm either, I figured Id use it when they're older & need lower temps.
I get my chicks tomorrow. Ive been adjusting the brooder, checking temps, etc. My pseudo-brooder temp hit 85 underneath on med. setting. Trying out the high setting now. So I...
I agree with trying to find a closer hatchery. How sad. :( I was afraid of that happening if I mail ordered. I live 2 hrs away from Meyers so chose to pick up. Long drive but figured it would be worth it.
Ill be picking mine up from Meyer. Im hoping I have the strength to just bring home what I ordered. Ive heard they have hatch deals in store with leftovers...
Same here. They had all the ones I wanted back then in stock. I thought I was crazy for ordering so early...then saw in Jan/ Feb they were out of a ton of breeds. Guess we werent so crazy!
Ive got the brooder almost ready, so Ive been working on their coop. Ive read a ton since Nov. too...
