Scott yes you can single mate. However in my opinion I would continue to double mate at least until you get the type you want set in both males and females. I would worry more about the type than the color. Get the tails set in the males etc etc etc first.
Jeff is correct in stating that most...
You are correct OSUman
.
Frank also has Partridge and possibly Silver Penciled. He got his Wyandottes from Duane Urch several years ago per a conversation I had with Frank. He is running several hundred hens of each variety over winter in an effort to help build up these varieties of birds...
If any one is interested in good Wyandottes get a hold of Duane Urch he has
Buff
Black
White
Silver Penciled
Partridge
Columbian
Golden Laced
He probably has the best Golden Laced In the U.S. most of his strains have been closed for many many years.
If you have the room perhaps you could...

I believe a lot of birds have been struggling longer than we might think. The list would be long. I think there are several contributing factors.
Many breed varieties have always been preferred in one color or another. Generally the easier colors to breed have excelled more rapidly than the...
That would be what I (key word I) would call pen breeding. This can work quite well. It is probably the easier way of double mating. Depending on the color variety it can and does work. The color defect you are trying to correct is probably the real determining factor though.
It would also be...
Double mating is more common than one may think among party colored birds of certain patterns.
It is very common for a color trait to be off one way or another which will result in the males or females of single line breeding to have either an excess or shortage of a certain color. This is...
I do not really know what my birds genetics are. I think it would probably be real real expensive to know exactly what they are.
In fact I am willing to bet that I could buy several flocks of great breeding birds for the money I would have to invest in the testing to find this out if it is...
According to the above my birds are
eWh/eWh s+/s+ Ar+/Ar+ Mh/Mh Db/Db 'rb/rb' (exhibition Rhode Island Red , depth of color from interaction of Mh and rb on Wheaton base. Undercolour from light Mahogany to salmon colour.
All credit to Van Dort and Hancox book. ( available in softcover from...
Here is my question of the day.
Since the genetics folks know what all of the genes listed above are can someone tell me how to turn the dimmer switch up or down for lets say 'rb/rb' or perhaps Mh/Mh?
I would like to do this without crossing in any different kind of birds or strains into my...
What are you considering at Strombergs.
The show quality sections of birds both large fowl and bantams are from Duane Urch. So are the adult pairs for sale. These are standard bred birds, this does not mean instant show winners. I think all of the other chickens are hatchery birds.
Charlie
Very very very good advice Scott.
By the way you are doing a great job with the Columbian rocks.
If you want Mark Peterson or Joe Burns number to talk to them about breeding Light Brahmas just email me. I know they both do double matings. They run separate male and female matings. I think they...
You could start with a trio and build up a small flock from there.
I would say 3 to 5 males and 9 to 15 females. I think you could pen breed these and raise say 15 to 25 birds annually and cull and replace some of the older birds keeping the number of breeders about the same every year and...
