2PM today my first 6 chicks arrived (3 Golden Star, 3 white Leghorn). They were all very active as soon as I put them in the brooder box and I dipped each ones beak in the chick waterer. Within a few minutes they were all drinking heartily. A few minutes later they were eating.
I want to say...
Thanks for a great article. I've been considering getting chicks for the last six months and finally took the plunge. I have a total of 14 chicks being shipped to me over the next two weeks.
Judy, thank you for your quick reply and wonderful explanation. So other than the heat lamp which they'll only need for a few weeks, if I leave the curtains open in the room I'm brooding them in, that should do it.
Should I start day old chicks off with 16 hours of lights on or do they need more sleep time? I'd like to get them acclimated to what they'll have in the coop. ( Yes, I know it will be a while but don't want to suddenly change their environment )
I had already ordered 7 day old chicks(4 White Leghorns, 3 Golden Buff (red star)) to be delivered the week of Nov 3 when I found some Delaware day old chicks that would be available the week of Nov 12 and ordered 7 of them also. Will I be able to brood them together or should I keep them...
The week of Nov 3rd I'll be receiving chicks for the first time. I'll be getting 3 Golden Buff and 4 White Leghorn females. My questions concern brooding them. How big a box am I going to need? How far above the chicks should a red 250 watt heat lamp be to start?
I am so looking forward to...
Am new to chicken raising and would like to start with Delawares. I'm in extreme southern SC and would like to see any birds I buy in their current setting.
I just purchased some property in Jasper County, S.C. and plan on establishing a small flock of chickens next spring. Would love to let them free range, but need to know what predators I need to be aware of.
Thanks in advance.
Welcome,
I'm currently in Austin, Tx but planning to re-locate to the lowcountry, my daughter lives in Beaufort. Currently looking for a couple of acres to buy. Was thinking about the Pointe South area.
Would like someone to point me in the right direction. Am planning to move to coastal South Carolina this coming summer and would like to raise Delawares starting the following spring. Want to learn as much as possible about them prior to the move.
TIA
Great thread. Thanks for the detailed info. I'm just learning about chickens and plan to have some in the near future, so have a lot of learning to do. Your historical information is much appreciated.
LOL. I've been in Texas since '93 and still write like a New Yorker even though when talking I sound like a Texan.
Crazy mixed up northerner/southerner!!
