After reading these posts I am so depressed. I have a coop full of 2 yr old hens (at least 20) and I am getting 1 egg every 2 days. Gonna have to have a serious talk with my girls.
My father frightened a mallard off her nest and she hasn't come back yet , do you think I can get one of my chickens( she's a broody!) to hatch them out?
Is the Deep Woods Off ok for the egglayers-meaning is there a withdrawal.I wouldn't think so seeing as how we humans can coat ourselves in it but just thought I'd ask.I'm using DE right now and as my mother would say "It's like a fart in a whirlwind"
I feed mine layer pellets, IMO they need that for better nutrition. Scratch is only for a treat around here and only in the colder months. If your going through a lot of feed try switching to pellets -less waste.
I know that everyone says to not wait but I like to.The only reason for me being that getting them on the day they come in there seems to be a higher rate of mortality than getting one that been there at least a week. Look for nice active chicks, those are the ones you want.
I had the same thing happen when I brought home a Cochin rooster, he ran around trying to mate each of my hens and was promptly refused and pecked by all. My husband and I laughed so hard at the sight of it. We named him Napoleon just because he was so much smaller than my girls but still...
Definitely quarantine them. I bought some chickens from a friend didn't do it and now my whole flock has that stupid mycoplasmosis(chicken cold)? Wish I had known that he got them from an auction.
Thats where I put mine ,depending on where you are it takes a good 6 months for it to break down into useable compost.Don't forget to turn it every now and then and water it down when you first put it out.
