I plan on getting some eggs or little ones this spring to raise instead of meat chickens this year. Anyone out there from my area (Jefferson County, Pennsylvania) who could help me out? I am not stuck on any specific breed at this time. If you can help me out please send me a message.
For some reason, my hens have started pulling all of their nesting materials out of the nest and scattering the eggs around the coop. Any ideas why in the world they would be doing this? I have tried straw, wood shavings and shredded news paper, all scattered out.
Just finished cleaning and freshening up the coop. I decided to pass on cleaning the run out since it was starting to sprinkle. I am glad I stuck with a small coop, I can't imagine having a large flock and room sized coop and the poo to go with it. Of course being a composter, now I need some...
My roo made the only unforgivable mistake, he went after my daughter. I managed to keep from ending his crowing days, he has vary limited time to go. He is in solitary confinement in my chicken tractor. He is all white with some orange/yellow tinting. When I say limited time, I am only...
I think I would like to give Turkey a try this year, how much would I expect to pay for hatching eggs or polts. I would really like some Royal Palms, but would consider another breed for my first try at them.
I have been trying to work out a cheap float for a watering system I want to build. My plan is a section of gutter, downspout into a large bucket or small barrel with a trough inside of the coop. They have one at TSC, but I don't want to spend the $10.00 for it. Anyone with plans, or better...
Alright, I caught my White bantam cochin rooster doing the deed with one of my New Hampshire Reds the other day, and yes the eggs are fertile, any idea what that would make? When I fire up the incubator this spring, I have to give it a try just to see what I end up with, but any thoughts as to...
Hello,
My New Hampshire Reds are laying eggs like crazy finally, right as they hit 6 months old, anyhow, several of my eggs have had small brown spots in them, I have been told these are called "Protien Spots". Is there a way to prevent them? or just deal with it? I want to sell my surplus...
Hello All. I am starting my search very early. I am wondering if anyone in my area of PA has Barred Rock or Plymoth Rock chickens. I will either be looking for peeps or hatching eggs this coming spring. After a trip to Colonial Williamsburg this year, I just gotta get some. I like to stay...
O.K., not sure why, but my one year old bantam cochin was making a kinda sneezing sound over and over, but otherwise seemed fine. she isn't sneezing now, but it seemed strange. Why do they do this?
I use to love dogs, but today when we got home there were two dogs going after my rooster, that changed my perspective on dogs. They managed to get ahold of him from outside the run and pull him right through the chicken wire. The worst part was that my daughters saw the whole thing. My 8...
Hello,
I have a couple people looking but I am still hoping someone out there close to me has an extra 4-8 week old Buff Orpington Roo they need to find a home for. He will have a good home and a group of girls waiting for him. I want to stay away from mixed breeds, and just stick to pure Buff...
I am looking for honest critique on this one. I spent a long time putting it together, mostly because I only had a little time each week to work on it, but I think it came out O.K. I do have plans for adding a small access door to put the feed and water in a little easier. I borrowed a system...
Hello,
After a bit of a possum problem, I had to start a new flock, I decided to go with Buff Orpingtons. I have 6 girls that are about 4 weeks old now, and they need a boyfriend. I would like to find one locally, or anyone passing through Jefferson County Pennsylvania, who has a 3 to 6 week...
When I left for work I had one little baby bantam cochin, when I got home from work, my wife said, you have two now, I go to the basement to check them out and there were 4 bantam cochins hatched. I have 4 more cochin eggs, and 4 more leghorn eggs (that I got from my swap partner from...
Hello,
I was talking to someone the other day and they were planning on butchering some old laying hens and said they were going to can them. I didn't think to ask them how they do this. I have canned venison before, but never any birds. Does anyone know how this is done? I don not have a...
Hello everyone. I have three Bantam Cochin Cockerals that need new homes. I lost track, but I think they are close to 2 months old. They are mostly black, a little bit of white mixed in there on a couple feathers. All three must go, but don't have to go together. I live in the Brookville, PA...
Any Fly tyers out there? I have considered getting a couple birds for hackle feathers, but not sure what breeds fit this category. I have some friends who tie flies, and I fly fish, so I had the thought, if I raise a couple birds to give them neck and saddle hackle, they could do the work to tie...
We just had our daughter's birthday party, we have lots of left over cake. Is it too sweet for the chickens? I figure taking the icing off and giving them some cake would be fine, but I wanted to check.
