    Free Ranging Muscovy Ducks

If ever there was an appropriate analogy like "breed like rabbits" this is it. Muscovy can sit on a clutch as large as over 2 dozen eggs and can go broody up to 5 times a year......unless you want more muscovy than you can deal with, leave him penned and watch her like a hawk - these are the...

New ducklings - wont eat and they're afraid of me

the more you handle and talk to them the more used to you they will get. it's easier to get a hatchling to imprint than an older duckling, but it is possible. It takes time and consistency,

San Diego/riverside/Orange - MUSCOVY EGGS WANTED

I am hoping to find muscovy eggs within driving distance and within a reasonable price range. I have never had luck with shipped eggs, so I am bypassing that option, all together. I have 2 hens, but only 1 seems to lay eggs, and the other goes broody, but is the absolutely worst mother I have...

    21 days till Market Week

The kids cornish are way behind the power curve. they are about 1/2 the size of the other kids birds. That is partially my fault because I didn't have the grow out brooder ready and they stayed in the chick brooder much longer than they should have, didn't get much sun exposure, etc. they...

    Mulberry Trees

I don't know what flavor I taste in my berries, I just know it is good and YES they do stain. Both Pakistani and Persian grow really well here, but I've only tasted the Persian since that is what my friends grow, as well as myself. I have seen the Pakistani fruit and they are indeed long. The...

    rain water collecting

I capture grey water. We don't get enough rain to do anything with. I even let the hose run into a barrel when I turn it on during the day, just so I can collect all the super hot water that I can't put directly on my plants.

    Feeding your garden

Rabbit and alpaca poop can go directly on/in the soil without any burning. It also helps retain moisture, This is what I use. I would never put chicken directly on because it will burn, that goes in the compost.

Silkie mix chick unknown mix, age or sex

There was no picture with the post, but in my experience, the cockerel will develop it's comb much, much sooner than the pullet will. It's easier to see on the non-bearded variety, than bearded.

    what are we?

I'd like to second that. Bronze have a particular pattern, a white would be yellow and anything in between wouldn't have a solid color. I loved my Spanish.

Grass - before and after chickens

I need your chickens to talk to mine. I have not a single blade of grass. I have sod but I have to keep a wire mesh cage over it so they can only eat what grows through the mesh. One stinking 2x4 piece of sod.

    Mulberry Trees

With our super strange weather in SoCal, my Persians fruited in December and again at the end of February into March. A friend just brought some fruit from her tree to a meeting on Friday. This is the only mulberry that I have ever tasted and have not a want to try any others. They are so...

At what age can you tell gender

For the fair we buy st run or whichever is cheaper. This year, there will be fewer kids with turkeys because of the crazy weather. Ours have to be a certain age by the market week and there were no hatcheries that sell to the public hatching at the time we needed them. I called feed stores...

4H turkeys - Suggestions on how to keep them active

I have a yellow and red feed bucket that I use. they see it and they get all excited. I also feed them in stages. Sometimes I collect the food they haven't eaten and mix it around in the bucket and and pour it back in the feeders and fake them out. They gobble it up thinking it's new stuff...

At what age can you tell gender

They look bronze. Where did you get them from? That would determine if they are a broad Breasted (Commercial) or heritage. I can usually tell at a pretty young age, but then again, I do a really good hen squeak and that normally makes the jakes strut even if they don't have anything to strut...

Can someone help me identify my ducks, please?

Sweeds have a white bib and Khaki are brown and a very muted 'mallard' coloring, if you will. The way the black/dark brown one stands, I'd say that is a runner. If they both stand up straight, they could both be runners.

turkey just dropped dead - would you eat it?

Appreciate the replies. I'll go the safe route. These aren't poults, we are withing 3 weeks of the fair - so you can see why I didn't want to waste it. I think it was about 20# :( I could use a little help in ensuring the kids are on top of things, though. Water cannot be hung. I had a...

turkey just dropped dead - would you eat it?

My son is on the spectrum and a loss might cause an irreparable meltdown. He does take care of the birds, however, when he is at school, he can't so I check on them (and my own flock) every 1.5-2 hours. My husband is a little more lax, and doesn't stay on top of the kids, like I do, to make...

turkey just dropped dead - would you eat it?

The boys are raising BB Whites for the fair. I have 2 that were banded for my son to work with. I let the rest free range and his 2 stay in the pen so the feed can be controlled better. They keep knocking the water over so it has to be filled several times a day. I wasn't home much the last...

Any other Seed Savers Exchange seed savers here?

The ONLY squash that produced fruit was the sketti squash. Not one zuch! Toms were a busy and so were beans and peas, but I'll be darned if my kale and kohlrabi weren't awesome! Tomatillo volunteers were amazing, collards great, and with the amount of ferns I had, I think my next growth will...
