    Fox attack

A fox managed to get in to my hen house. It killed 2 young pullets, one is missing, so assume he took that one away with him. One other pullet was on the coop floor, and I thought she was dead, but she is indoors now and still alive. I have checked her over but can't find any injuries. She is...

    Jersey Giant x Le Bresse

I wanted to get a dual purpose breed, that would be a good size for meat and a decent egg layer. So I opted for jersey giants, and hatched 4 that turned out to be pullets. Then realised that they were slow maturing, so after a bit of reading, decided to hatch some le bresse as they are big and...

What age to let chicks out?

I have 2 one week old chicks. At what age can I let them go outside for a while, and how long for? In the day time the temp has been 50/60 degrees Fahrenheit.

Gave broody 2 one week old chicks

I could not break my broody, so decided to give her 2 chicks that hatched 1 week ago. Initially it seemed to be going ok, for the first hour or so, she kept them tucked under her. Then 1 started to chirp madly, I went to check, and it was in a corner alone. I tried to put it back under her, but...

    Eggtopsy! What happened?

[/IMG] This egg went into lockdown alive, almost 100% sure, as I saw it moving. Pumped up the humidity to 75%. It didn't hatch, so I checked it, and did the eggtopsy. What do you think happened?

Integrating broody and her 5 week chicks back to main flock?

I have a broody that I moved to her own mini coop to hatch some chicks. The chicks are 5 weeks old now and mostly all feathered. I have been letting my main flock and the broody with the chicks free range together for over a week now, without a problem. Would it be OK now to put the broody and...

    Spraddled legs?

I had a chick hatch late last night, and I believe it has spraddled legs. One of its legs is spread out to the side, it can't stand and it's shuffling along on its bottom. I tried taping the legs, but it kept falling on to its side, so I took it off. Any help will be great fully appreciated.

    Giving broody egg and chick?

So my quiery is that I have a broody on my hands. I have 1 egg due to hatch in the next 24 hours, and another single egg due to hatch in 7 days. If I let the incubator finish off both hatches, could I then put both chicks under her when the second one hatches?

    Broody fighting her flock

I have 5 pullets. 1 went broody 6 weeks ago and has hatched out 4 chicks that are nearly 3 weeks old now. The broody is in a separate pen with an attached run, that runs side by side with the main coop and run, so they are all able to see each other all day, every day. Today I decided to let...

Ideas how to make this into a brooder? (Pictures added)

So I found this on the roadside for free. Thought that I might be able to make a brooder out of it. (Got chicks hatching in 2 and 3 weeks) The width is perfect but it's not deep enough. My thoughts are to take the doors of, and add wood to the sides and extend the depth level with the existing...

    3 different humidity readings

I have a rcom king suro 20 incubator. The humidity on the bator is reading 44%. I also have 2 separate humidity readers which I calibrated. On calibration, 1 read 74% and the other 72%. I have now put both in the incubator and it's confusing me. The one that read 74% is reading 38%, the one...

Help needed with R-com king suro 20

Can anyone help me with information on the pumping system. I have set up the incubator but I am having problems with the pumping system that regulates the humidity. When it pumps, the water is not being pumped up enough to reach the top of the hose and go into the incubator. If I raise the...

    Information on hatching la bresse

I am getting 6 la bresse eggs today that I will be incubating. I read that these eggs are not the easiest to hatch as they void a bloom, therefore, a dry incubation method is needed so that they loose enough weight to be able to hatch. Has anyone had experience hatching this breed? And what...

Feeding chicks and pullets when integrated

I have some week old chicks and should have a few more hatching in 3 weeks. They are kept separated from the big girls till they are big enough to all go in the main coop. My question is "when I integrate the young ones with the main flock, they should still be on chick food, while the big girls...

    Bargain!

I got myself a cracking bargain today. I saw an add on Gumtree (UK selling site) for a brooder kit, which included drinker, feeder, brooding light, candling lamp amongst other few bits. So I went and bought it as I thought it would be useful for hatching next spring. The person was selling for...

24 hours externally pipped and no change

I have a broody sitting on 5 eggs. Today is day 20. As of yesterday, 1 egg had externally pipped, 24 hours later it is still the same. 2 others have also externally pipped today but it's still early to worry about those. But I am getting concerned about the 1 that pipped 24 hours ago. What...

    Is this OK?

I have a broody sitting on 5 eggs. Today is day 19 and broody left the nest to eat. She only left the eggs for about 3-4 minutes. I thought that from day 18 they sat and didn't move till the eggs hatched?
