Sick Hen?, very subdued and off-color combs

I have a six month old hen that is very subdued and has off-color combs and wattles. She's currently being picked on a bit by one other hen, Any ideas what might be the problem based on these pics? In the full body pic, she's standing in an awkward position, and this is how I've observed her...

I got my first EVER eggs yesterday. Happy dancing!

One of my 4 young ladies layed these two beauties. I wasn't expecting anything for another month, as they are only 5 months old, to the day. I also didn't think the day length was long enough, but I'm happy. I got one more today. I beleive one of these was sitting in the box from the previous...

    Is this she a he?

I have 4 5 month old Buff Orp hens. I'm beginning to think one of the girls is a he, and the funny thing is, her name is Bob. My daughter named her Bob as a joke, but I'm beginning to think it is actually a Bob, and not a Bobette. Your thoughts?

Can I begin layer feed soon?

My pullets are 16 weeks old, and I've been feeding them grower crumble. I've got about 3 to 4 weeks more of the grower crumble left, which will bring them up to about 20 weeks. Would it be ok to start feeding them layer crumble at 20 weeks? This will put us about mid-March. I don't want to have...

Open Air Poultry Houses for all Climates - book in hand. (I think it's kinda cool)

So, I became interested in this book because of several posts in this thread: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/445004/woods-style-house-in-the-winter I noticed in the Google e-book that it was scanned from a copy at NC State University's DH Hill Library. Well, I just happen to take classes...

Is there a way to change the number of replies per page?

In the old software, there was a way to increase the number of replies that displayed per page, making it so you didn't have to continually be hitting "next" to get to the next page. I had mine set at something like 100 per page. I can't seem to find that option in this new platform. Is this...

    Show me your PVC feeders

I'm trying to decide if I want to make a gravity fed PVC feeder...the type that uses like 4" PVC that you fill at the top and the chickens eat out of a wye. I'd like to know why you built yours the way you did, what you'd do differently, etc. Thanks!

Are these your chickens in Wake county NC?

I was driving back from Southern States yesterday and decided to take an unknown route home (I like to explore). I stumbled upon these chickens, close to the road. I just had to turn around and snap a couple of pictures. As I pulled over, they all came running up toward the front area. Sorry...

    Rant: Plastic bags

Is it just me or is it just plain senseless to place just a single small item in a grocery/shopping bag without asking the customer if he/she wants a bag? I'm tired of going into stores and buying one or two small items and having the cashier automatically place said items in a bag. I'd like...

Can I leave my chicks for 4 days unattended?

I have 4 chicks that just turned 6 weeks old today. My wife and I are planning to go to Florida for 4 days over Christmas. By that time my babies will be almost 11 weeks old. I have a 2 gallon waterer and a large feeder. They do not yet go outside the coop, although I just finished their run...

How old is too old to believe

Another topic regarding Santa got me thinking about this. My daughter, who just turned 12 in October, still seems to believe in Santa. Is this wrong? How old were your children when they discovered that Santa was not "real".

wanting to add a video camera in my coop

I'm thinking about adding a camera in my coop, but have no idea how to do this. Can anyone suggest a system? My coop has power but it's about 40' from the house. I'd like to be able to view the video on my phone.

Maybe new dog-any experience with Golden Retrievers?

So my wife and I are thinking about maybe getting a Golden Retriever next year. I have 4 hens that I plan to let loose in the fenced in back yard. Will a retriever be ok around chickens? The name itself has me wondering.

    Triangle NC area meetup?

Do any of you that live in the Triangle area of NC ever meet up? I'm new to keeping chickens (my babies are two weeks old) and would love to meet up with like minded chicken lovers.

My chicks arrived! Doing the happy chick dance!

My first ever baby chickens arrived this morning. I received a call from my post office at about 6:30. I'm so excited, as I've never owned or raised chickens before. I ordered 4 Buff Orps from My Pet Chicken, and all 4 arrived alive and chirping. Here are a couple of pictures:

Can my coop be my brooder?

I'm expecting my first ever baby chicks to arrive next Wednesday. I've been building a coop, and it's almost done. Can I use the coop as the brooder? I'm currently set up with a quite large rubbermaid storage container, but I was thinking after the first few days, why couldn't I just move them...
