Please Help.....I have to build a new coop due to city ord.

Sounds like they want it to cost more than they are worth. A complete concrete building with 4 sq. ft. per chicken. WOW. I might can see a rooster in a neighborhood but hens? Most cities allow hens and i see they do to after you spend a $1000 just to have a building for them?

    Turkey Talk for 2014

This will be my forth year to have my own turkey for Thanksgiving but this is the first time I ran into this. Wondered if someone has had this. I had a 1 1/2 yr. old that I used for this year and when I started processing I found a large fat sack at the neck and chest area. I cut out most of it...

what is the best auto sexing breed?

Curious, why not for food? Do these birds not produce a good edible meat or is it tough or you just saying that because of what you have to go through to produce them. I have been doing Hambars and thought that one of the reason for sexing was to know what you had in order to keep or eat?

    Chuck

Starting to hatch BBS Orpingtons. I am in Mobile, AL. At this time I do not have enough to ship but hope to within the next couple months. I have day old up to year. I have day olds now at $6. Black rooster that was with original order that I am selling. About 11 months. $20. These are from...

    The Rhodebar thread!

I believe people go for the hatchery lines because they were crossed with heavy production birds to pick up their egg production. I have a breeder that has heritage lines and he warns people that his line produce less eggs so the act of crossing chickens to production, hatchery or crossed lines...

    Breeding Hambars/Hampbars

Well, from what I have read on some, the production lines are more practical to most people since that was the original reason for them was egg production. I think that is why a lot of people has used them in crossing lines like this was to keep the egg production along with a sexing chicken. I...

    The Rhodebar thread!

I still am trying to understand the barring. The difference with single and double. Are you looking for more barring, a dilution of the color due to the barring? My picture of course shows my roos. I am taking it that they are single but I really haven't understood enough of the barring to know...

    Breeding Hambars/Hampbars

German? There are German New Hampshire? Geez. Not sure what to do. I do need some more Buff Orpingtons and have thought of just ordering some New Hampshires and Buffs from a hatchery and taking my chances especially after talking to my local breeder. His Pure line NH lay, just not a many as some...

    The Rhodebar thread!

True. I am trying to take my Hambars back to RIR and even there they say that I can get Rhodebar color but might take another 3 to 4 generations to get the autosexing.

    The Rhodebar thread!

That's a tall order. You can read what the original breeders mated to make the first Rhodebars. http://greenfirefarms.com/store/category/chickens/rhodebar/, tells a little about them. I have read some things about even that process might take 4 years in order to get the first line that will look...

    Breeding Hambars/Hampbars

Yes. I realized I would take a female from the first line and breed it back to the father and the line off that should bring me double barred that I can then breed together to make the auto sexing I want. I have read some information on some of the sites that makes me wonder. I have picked up...

    Breeding Hambars/Hampbars

All right. I bet when this thread was started no one ever realized it would go on for 4 years. I have the, I guess what one would call the Hambar mutt rooster. Hambar in looks but not the best specimen. I have read that to get the double barring you can take it back to a New Hampshire and the...

    Breeding Hambars/Hampbars

Yes, I can see my roo is fairly long and I will be bringing in New Hampshire hens and try and get a good model to use as my breeding rooster. Has been a great learning experience reading all that I could. You learn something new everyday, even at 56.

    Breeding Hambars/Hampbars

Good question. I ran across mine buying what I thought were Rhodebars in Florida and he claimed to have 50 pair. Of course I have learned they were Hambars, be it not great specimens but something to work with. If you ask around you probably won't find many who have heard of them or have them so...

    Breeding Hambars/Hampbars

Yea, have read a lot and some can be more confusing than others. I will have to make my decision, that's for sure. At this point I all ready had RIR so I will let them continue until I get some New Hampshire hens old enough to breed. By that time I might have some chicks from the RIR and the...

    Mobile, AL

I guess now I can say that I have Hambars/Hampbars. I thought they were Rhodebars but after reading more and lookiing at more pictures I find them to be Hampbars. I will be breeding them not only to New Hampshire to strenghten the breed and get a better Breeder Rooster but will go with them to...

    The Rhodebar thread!

I have these 2 hens that are just starting to lay. Less than a year old. So I am taking it that I breed these to the male Hambars and then a female offspring back to him. Would that hopefully, fingers crossed produce both male and female Rhodebars? Bright sun light might not due best judgement...

    Breeding Hambars/Hampbars

Well, I guess with some of the comments and advice from others I might just have to go ahead and breed these Hambars I have. I lost one hen and I guess I can get one from the one pair and keep it for the other. Will probably keep a couple hens anyway to produce more. I can always add my RIR and...

    The Rhodebar thread!

I guess after reading and looking at pictures I would have to say that what I have are Hambar. I see they are autosexing which I was after but I still was after Rhodebars so I guess I will see if I can sell them. I really only have room for so many chickens and someone has to go. Haven't seen a...

    The Rhodebar thread!

The more I read on these birds the more I wonder. I admit, a lot of people have different thoughts on these birds but it does look like my birds could be Rhodebars if they were a lot darker.I believe I will be starting all over again with a couple pairs from someone else.
