    rescue hens??

Interesting experiment. I would keep hold of them and track any change in eggs following the change in diet. Ask the previous owners if they want them back if they start laying, if not you could always give them away to someone else. If it turns out they are not laying at all you can always...

Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

panting yes, they pant all the time and that doesn't bother me, but I have noticed a distinct correlation between temperature and bodily response by my Australorp cross (went temp reaches 42-46). Heat stress symptoms in this one girl becomes a deep throaty gurgling pant that wracks the body and...

Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Thanks Appps, her gurgling raspy breath eased to a pant and I finally managed to get her to take a few mouth fulls of cold yoghurt. As long as there are no secondary effects from heat stroke I think she made a narrow escape Thank goodness for the cool change (and air conditioning) I'm glad I...

Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

42 in my yard and I think my sussex x Australorp may not survive this one :( I have her in a box in the air con after finding her with excessive panting wracking her whole body, refusing to eat or drink cold treats even yogurt which is one of her faves. Fingers crossed, hang in there blackie

    My silly chicken

what do you bait your trap with? I have found stale bread (holds onto the trap really securely) or hard cheese with peanut butter is quite irresistible for vermin. They are quite cluey though the cheeky sods and may figure out that thig big metal jawed snappy thing = bad. I wonder if changing...

Typically how long after having chicks does the mama start laying again?

The mental image is hilarious, but I can totally see the bantam broody fixation, staying big momma as long as possible! Ages ago we had a mixed flock of 12-14 girls, 2 of which were bantams. They were ALWAYS hiding their eggs. Our girls particularly liked to get into the middle of a clump of...

Can I feed it anything to put it out of her misery?

A trip to the vet to euthanaise is quite cheap if you are like me and can't bring yourself to swing an axe. Good luck, it is not nice watching them suffer

Typically how long after having chicks does the mama start laying again?

Good question. I have been wondering that myself. I have just been keeping an eye on the comb of my girl waiting for it to go red again. Maybe post a picture of the hen or more info on the breed to make it easier for someone to help you.

    Budgie's are Laying (Need Help)

When budgies mate the male sits on the back of the female and he rubs his vent against the females vent (bottom to bottom). so I would go with epic fighting :)

    My silly chicken

lol I know what you mean, I must have put the eggs to my ear a hundred times listening for pipping. I managed to hear the internal pipping but missed the rock'n'rolling and the outer pip and zip. I also have cockatiels inside who are learning how to be parents. The pair hatched one chick and...

Why is my hen laying her eggs on the roost?

My girls have laid a couple in the roost area (completely seperate from the nest box) and I put it down to rearrangements in the pen. I had moved stuff around. I have also had thinner shelled eggs once or twice in the roost which I think were prematurely laid from some sort of shock or scare...

    My silly chicken

He he he, it is very egg-citing to let a broody hen have her first clutch! Had a bit of a chuckle TurtlePowerTrav thinking about the whole teaching to swim thing ;) Where abouts in oz are you kleonaptra? Im in Yass, my girl hatched a chick 5 weeks ago and I have been amazed how well it is...

    My silly chicken

Yep dropping the temp is good, but personally I avoid the wire cage option if I can. With my girls I just keep pulling them out of the nesting box, and take the eggs. That took about a week of moving one girl who would stay off if given food treats. Unfortunately this wont work for all...
