    RIR with sore/tumor on eye

Probably the only way to know if it's cancer if to have a vet look at it but that's a good $50 or more, you could try treating it for pox if that's less expensive and see what happens.

    RIR with sore/tumor on eye

I don't know if this is what your chicken has but it's a possibility... I have a SLW I bought a year ago. Didn't notice any problems until a few weeks ago. She had a scabby area around her beak and a balloon-like bulge coming out one nostril (really gross!) She couldn't even close her beak all...

    Keeping kids healthy around chickens

Didn't see this question anywhere but if it's on here already just point me in the right direction ;) I have 2 children under 3 years old who play out in the backyard with our free range chickens. Is there any extra precautions against disease to take other than washing their hands after...

    Today's temperature = # of eggs.

So Sounds like you might live not too far from me...that was exactly our weather yesterday. I was amazed to get 4/5! That's the first time they've done that..maybe they liked the weather ;)

    Today's temperature = # of eggs.

It's been in the upper 40s for a high and I've been getting 2-3 eggs per day from 5 hens. But today was in the 50s and NO EGGS! I think they were mad because I kept them locked up all day because they kept jumping the fence and laying around the yard.

How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

2/5 for 3 days in a row..that's actually good for what they've been doing! Keep finding eggs all over the yard though and every time I do they move the nest. I'm thinking there may be more eggs out there. None are molting and 2 just started laying so all 5 are laying now.

Can chickens stand the cold weather?

I know y'all probably laugh at us southerners for being so sensitive to cold. But let me tell you... A wet cold is the nastiest thing! I wish we had dry cold weather! Oh well...

Can chickens stand the cold weather?

They are quite soaked. It's windy and VERY rainy and they don't have much protection. I don't think we've ever had rain like this here..almost constant since Monday. It's flooding the yard. I think I'll try to put them in the crawl space. Maybe they'll eat some of the thousands of crickets...

Can chickens stand the cold weather?

Question: we're getting a ton of rain here in SC and my chickens are soaked. Tonight it's supposed to get down to 30 degrees with some ice and snow. Our henhouse is not very well built and one "wall" is just some outdoor fabric. It seems to be getting wet inside even though I put plastic over...

    New eggs!!!

Ok. Sounds like these may be fine but I'll double-check first. I'm sure they were out at least one night..maybe two. It's been rainy here the last several days and I wasn't feeling well so I didn't keep the nesting box clean. Guess they decided to find a cleaner spot to lay.

    New eggs!!!

How about when it's cool outside? The weather here has been in the 50s in the day (although it got close to 70 over the weekend). At night it's gotten down to the 30s or 40s. I just discovered a hidden nest under a wheelbarrow with 3 eggs. I'm guessing they are from this week. One hen had been...

    Free Wyandotte rooster (SC)

Eagleghost17: I think it will be too much trouble (and money) to ship. There are a couple if local people that want him. Thanks though!

    Free Wyandotte rooster (SC)

I can check into it If you can pay shipping. I wouldn't be able to. I paid $10 for him just a few months ago and i'm giving him away because the farm where I bought him is giving me a free hen to replace him. If you give me your zip code I can see what it would cost to ship.

    Free Wyandotte rooster (SC)

I have a handsome silver-laced Wyandotte rooster with green wings/tail who needs a home! He's about 8 months old. He was supposed to be a hen and I can't keep roosters in my neighborhood. Greenville SC area. I can email or text pics.

How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

My hens are Wyandottes. They lay nice large brown eggs and going by y'all's calculations I guess they're doing better than I thought. Still not sure if all 4 are laying but they may be. They never make noise when they lay so I hardly ever see which ones are laying. My mom has an EE, barred...

How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

The warm weather here in the south is helping my hens FINALLY start laying 1-2 eggs every day (out of 4 hens so looks like only 3 are laying every other day. But it's pretty good for what they were doing!) Question: do certain breeds lay every day/every other day or does it just depend on the...

    South Carolina

New on here and just found this thread. Wow there's more South Carolinians on here than I thought! Surprised how many are in the low country though. I'm in the Greenville area. Outside of city limits so we can have chickens unless the neighbors complain (so far I'm ok...whew!)

To clip or not to clip?

Ok thanks! Yes, 2 of them are young (less than a year). They are the ones that started it. They do it more if I limit how much feed I'm giving them. Should I give them as much food as they want? They're eating me out of house and home!

To clip or not to clip?

My chickens have been getting very adventurous lately. They roam my chain-linked fence backyard all day. The fence is normal fence height (around 4 ft I'm guessing). They were fine until the rooster starting flying up on top of my back patio wall which is slightly taller than the chain-linked...
