    Got my first 6 chicks

2PM today my first 6 chicks arrived (3 Golden Star, 3 white Leghorn). They were all very active as soon as I put them in the brooder box and I dipped each ones beak in the chick waterer. Within a few minutes they were all drinking heartily. A few minutes later they were eating. I want to say...

    Another Newbie Question (Lighting)

Judy, thank you for your quick reply and wonderful explanation. So other than the heat lamp which they'll only need for a few weeks, if I leave the curtains open in the room I'm brooding them in, that should do it.

    Another Newbie Question (Lighting)

Should I start day old chicks off with 16 hours of lights on or do they need more sleep time? I'd like to get them acclimated to what they'll have in the coop. ( Yes, I know it will be a while but don't want to suddenly change their environment )

Thanks for the quick reply. I've got a 4x5 box, so that should be plenty of room for the 7 of them.

The week of Nov 3rd I'll be receiving chicks for the first time. I'll be getting 3 Golden Buff and 4 White Leghorn females. My questions concern brooding them. How big a box am I going to need? How far above the chicks should a red 250 watt heat lamp be to start? I am so looking forward to...

I just purchased some property in Jasper County, S.C. and plan on establishing a small flock of chickens next spring. Would love to let them free range, but need to know what predators I need to be aware of. Thanks in advance.
