Yeah, I have heard shavings are the best. Hay gets moldy and can cause serious respiratory problems.

I have some hens that lean toward being broody but I am not sure. Can I just seperete one with a pile of eggs and see if they go for it? Especially one that sits in the hen house nest for hours. I would like for some to go broody and raise some chicks.
