Freedom Rangers vs "Colored Free Range Boilers"

They are exactly the same thing, from the same source. Purely Poultry is a drop shipper. You'll save some money by ordering directly from Freedom Ranger (formerly JM).

PPBA Show in Stockton, CA in January?

Quote: There definitely weren't any LF gold-laced wyandottes. A bunch of SL, and a handful of BLRs plus some other types, but no gold-laced. I was really surprised at how few large fowl there were this year in comparison to previous years. It seems like every year the bantam building gets...

    California - Northern

Quote: Hi jenesis! Welcome! I live just up the road from you in Los Gatos (in the mountains) and you're definitely in NorCal. I think I've seen you on the svchickens yahoo group (I'm "Laura in Los Gatos" there). If you're looking for more chicks, keep in mind it's still winter time. In a...

PPBA Show in Stockton, CA in January?

Hi all! I haven't been around much this year on BYC -- too much else going on in the real world. But I *am* going to Stockton, and I would like to meet up with some of you who I've met in previous years. Is the current plan to meet in the raffle area at noon?

    California - Northern

They're most likely wild. We have wild turkeys all over California, including in the suburbs. In some areas they're starting to become pests.

Bay Area Meet Up/Chicken Swap - Sunday October 10th!

Eeee! I couldn't make the NorCal chickenstock, but this is perfect for me! As a deep south bayer, I'd prefer somewhere like San Leandro (centrally located) over Lafayette (a longer drive). Subscribed!

Your experience with "dual purpose" birds

I raised both barred rock roos and buckeye roos all in one pen (at seperate times) and they were fine. They do spar a lot, and there's a bunch of competitive crowing in the morning, but no actual fighting. The BRs were slaughtered at 16 weeks and the buckeyes at 18 -- still too young to really...

    Plucking problems.

Yes, age, and yes, you avoid the hairs by slaughtering earlier. The hairs seem to appear sometime around 16 weeks (although it varies with breed). Singeing the carcass was a very common way of finishing up a chicken back in the day.

where can i order freedom rangers?

I ordered 50 and offered the extra chicks up for sale on our local backyard chickens list. Got so much response from people that I called JM and doubled the order to 100. Now we have a little meat bird community here and we're going to split more orders in the future.

What temperature of the water when you are ready to pluck a chicken?

If I scald at 150 or higher the pin feathers are harder to remove, and the black pin feathers leave spots on the skin. It also seems to cook the skin a little, which makes for an ugly dressed bird (I don't care, but I'm selling chickens now and the prettier I can make them the better.) I...

What to package poultry in for freezer camp?

I just harvested 20 FRs this weekend and vacuum sealed them. It works great, but it's sloowwwwwww, and I was super tired at the end of the day when it was time for packaging. I'm ordering the shrink bags for next time.

    First time Freedom Rangers

Ditto what everyone else said. Mine were fed 20% nonmedicated chick starter 24/7, and they do go completele nuts if the feeders run out. I have roosts but not many of them use it.

    resting the butchered birds

I bag first, then put them on ice in an ice chest (no room in my fridge) for 36-48 hours, adding more ice if necessary. I don't like ice and water because I think the chickens get kind of a mushy feel that way. I could be imagining it, tho. I do use ice water baths in between the processing...

OOooohhhhhh I want turkeys so bad.

    Dual purpose breeds as meaties

I've grown rocks, BOs and brahmas for meat. The rocks grow really fast, but the BOs do catch up around week 16. I found the BOs had slightly larger legs and thighs than the rocks but the body shape is pretty much the same. I didn't find that BOs eat much more, but I was raising them in a...

    Just ordered 50 Kosher Kings

Please keep up updated on how the Kosher Kings grow and how they turn out, especially compared to the FR. I'm curious about this breed, too.

    Freedom Ranger weights

My FRs are exactly the same age as yours, and mine are just a tad heavier than that, maybe half a pound. I raised them on 20% non-medicated chick starter. I'm going to process them this weekend because they're on the large side of what I like. I didn't like the FRs much when they were...

    Pl 90-492

Public Law 90-492 is the 1957 Wholesome Poultry Products Act. It's the federal law that requires poultry to be slaughtered in a USDA-approved facility if you're going to sell them to anyone else. There's an exemption to 90-492 that says you can do on-farm processing and sales (and not need...

    Deformed cornish chick

I would cull that chick. If he can't drink dehydration is a hard way to die. I believe it's more humane to put down the ones that you know aren't going to make it rather than wait.
