    Backyard Brahmas!!

I know this is from a conversation from nearly 2 weeks ago and I apologize for digging so far back but, I have a couple of questions and I believe you are the best person to ask lol. Ok...where to start... My daughter picked up 2 "Light Brahma" hens from an auction a few months ago. They...

    Backyard Brahmas!!

Beautiful girl! She looks just like my Dark Brahma pullet at about 8 months or so. She has reddened up but her wattles and comb haven't filled out yet either. My two Light Brahma pullets, however, are a bit older, maybe 10 or 11 months or so. They both started laying earlier this week...

    Backyard Brahmas!!

When I think of vulture hocks I picture the stiff long feathers on my d'uccles. Your Brahma doesn't seem to have those feathers. His look soft and fluffy. Just not grown in all the way down his legs yet.

    Backyard Brahmas!!

My nest boxes are at floor level in the coop. None of my roosts are more than 18" off the floor since my Brahma cockerel crippled his foot I suspect from jumping.

    Backyard Brahmas!!

Such a handsome boy. He looks so tall. I'd love to see how he's going to turn out. I'll bet when he fills out in a year or so he's going to be a very impressive little barnyard brahma.

    Backyard Brahmas!!

I know Brahmas are technically am American made breed from what I've read. But they're bred from stock which originated in warm tropical to temperate climates if I'm not mistaken in the far East. So I'd think they'd be fine in any climate.

    Backyard Brahmas!!

Mine did fine this past summer even with days and days in the 90s and tons of humidity. I think the most important thing is to give them the option of going where they choose. They'll regulate themselves between shade, sun, cool dirt pits, etc. Just make all of those things available to them...

    Tylan 50 injectable taken orally?

Thank you for the quick reply! I just don't want to be taking antibiotics myself through my eggs that I don't need. I work in a nursing home and see every day so many med resistant bacteria. It's crazy!

    Tylan 50 injectable taken orally?

When dosing with tylan do you have to not eat eggs for a while afterwards? If so, what's the waiting period. Also, I've been giving .5 ml orally for 4 days and don't see much improvement. It's a full sized Light Brahma. Should I dose more because it's a bigger bird? Can they be...

    Backyard Brahmas!!

I know! They're so massive and terrifying looking with that heavy brow. Like they're constantly scowling. And they're actually the sweetest cuddly things in the yard.

    Backyard Brahmas!!

Congrats! Getting eggs for the first time is always exciting. My dark brahma still hasn't laid. Though I am glad a couple of the others have picked up again since I added lighting a month ago.. I got two 6 month old light brahma pullets over the weekend. Though it seems funny to use the term...

Ended Official BYC Contest - Worst Chicken Molt Pictures - Fall/Winter 2014

Wish I'd have know about this contest before. A few weeks ago my Aunt's 7 yr old Production Red was molting so so badly. We joked about butchering her because she's so mean and conveniently was already pre plucked. She's gorgeous now with bright copper red, brand new feathers and I didn't get...

    Backyard Brahmas!!

I'm curious too what their eggs will look like. The one you posted looks like my Speckled Sussex's eggs.

    Backyard Brahmas!!

Yup. It seems pullets will start laying when ever they're supposed to, even if it's mid winter and lay right straight through no matter how many hours of daylight they're getting. BUT the following fall, when they're a year old, they'll slow down once the days shorten. At least that's been my...

    Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

I can't even imagine how someone can hate chickens. Especially someone who's fine with ducks? Poor chickens!

    Backyard Brahmas!!

I just did the math and my girl is around 30 wks and still hasn't laid. She's getting bigger and bigger though so I'm not complaining. I'd rather have a monstrous brahma laying a few eggs than a little one laying like a leghorn.

    Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

Sooo...my sis in law has five 6 month Narragansett turkeys. She'd originally planned on keeping them long term or butchering in a month or so. But she's now got to get rid of them and is considering posting them on craigslist for somebody else to butcher in a month or two. Can anybody give us...
