Future breeding experiment. Cross black leghorns to white leghorns to produce blue leghorns. Then cross in araucana so they lay blue eggs. Maybe next spring.
Come to think of it, I could do the same thing using Jersey Giants. Hmmm...big blue birds that lay big blue eggs...
There is an irrigation canal that runs alongside the freeway at Marana (actually Sandario) Road. I have seen raccoon tracks there, because the area is heavily overgrown with brush (I was stopping to check out a bobcat that had been hit by a car). Hopefully, the raccoons will stay with the water...
No, you can't completely delete it. I usually just wipe the text, then type in post deleted. I did one a few days ago where I responded to a text message, then realized I just posted my text on the forum! Major cranial gas.
BTW, welcome to BYC!
There are plenty of predators you never see, even in central Tucson. Go back thru the last few months of posts and check it out. I will make a bet that Oro Valley will be quite a bit worse. Many people lose chickens to local dogs, a particularly bad pit bull was put down in Marana last month...
HORNWORMS HAVE ARRIVED!
While topping off the sump tank in my greenhouse yesterday, I spotted what looked like mesquite seed pods floating in the water. On closer inspection, they turned out to be drowned caterpillars of the tomato hornworm species. BUT, these were 5 and 6 inches long and about...
LOL! Started some bacon on the stove, then went out to the run to check for fresh cackleberries to go with it. Ended up filling some waterers, cleaning feathers off the fan, then sat down to socialize with the chooks. The smell of bacon wafting thru the open window sent me running back inside...
Cats, dogs, coyotes, bobcats, oh my!
Tractor Supply, freeway frontage road (west side) just north of Ina.
Fence controller, $49
200' aluminum wire, $12 per spool
Isolators, about $10 a bag, depending on type.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Hi, and welcome to the Tucson thread!
I am kind of bi-located right now, have one house in far north Marana, and just bought another place 10 miles further west in Avra Valley. All my chickens are at my Marana house for right now, but I'm slowly getting moved!
Yep, checking out the SOP, and the only difference I can find is the Andalusian has slate legs, and the leghorn has yellow legs. These have slate legs, so I'm going with Blue Andalusian. But, while searching the web for blue leghorns, I found some that were produced by crossing black and white...
mmm......Don't think so. Large floppy single comb, white earlobes, lays white eggs. I did notice the feathers are much tighter and closer to the body than my other chickens.
LEGHORN QUESTION?
OK, I'm boarding some chickens for another member who is moving. Some EE's, some RIR's, and two that look like leghorns, but with silver gray feathers with darker lacing. Is this a recognized color for leghorns?
another thing with the @pipemum is that you get a notification from BYC when somebody mentions you in a post, You will get one anyway this time because I quoted you, but if I hadn't quoted you, you would get a notification.
You have almost convinced me to start some meaties.
When I rinse out...
