We have adopted 5 chickens from someone whose landlord didn't allow them. They were all bought from a pet store and she told us they are about a year old which I find hard to believe, unless they are bantams, because we have bigger chickens just over 8 months old.
2 are RIR and look like...
My GLWs hatched in early September last year, which is the end of winter here in NZ. It's now the start of winter and my other breed having just finished a moult, im wondering how long it will be before the Wyandottes start laying. Still very small combs and no squatting.
Thanks so much, made my day.
I was all but certain they were girls too, but my previous thread asking the same qn with the photos of the younger birds got 50/50 answers.
Im still finding it hard to categorically pinpoint the gender of my Wyandottes...they all seem to have tail feathers like pullets but one or two could be young roos. At what age should they start laying??
It's cooling down here in NZ, mid Autumn so wondering if they may start later?
I have...
My Wyandotte chicks are almost identical with tail feathers etc, one appears darker with less gold lacing but I think these are all girls - any ideas please?
They share their coop with three ducklings who were left in our near-empty pond by their Mum who hasn't been seen since :(
Yes that's my predicament. It eats but doesnt produce (much). I have enough eggs from my other girls so dont really need her but still im struggling with the thought of 'removing' her. I have red & brown shavers, main production birds which I bought as pullets from a farm so they're great layers.
My oldest shaver is off the lay, but as its been awhile, i'm wondering if she will start again. I have her isolated as I wanted to find out who was/wasn't producing. She is over 4 yrs old & has featherless patches of skin, some of which on her backside are quite red looking.
so-is it time to...
thanks for the advice! Well since that post, she is sitting happily on a small clutch of eggs & I haven't seen her off them! She growls if you try to touch her & seems very trance-like. Very exciting, but a shame as I don't think she's missed a day since starting to lay. 2 of the eggs aren't...
My little bantam Australorpe has been laying for nearly two weeks, about 10 eggs so far so she's doing well.
Can a hen go broody straight away? or do they get some egg-laying time in first?
Hello all, first post...i have a young BA, about 26 weeks & it follows my roo everywhere, getting up if he moves. tried to sex it as a chick & hopefully female, but is this normal behaviour while still yet to reach maturity? could it be a young male? its not making any noises. i will take a...
