Some people just don't understand. People at my work look at me as if i am nuts when they find out that we have 2 roosters! "don't they fight?" "aren't they loud?" They never fight; they were best friends back at my friend's farm and still are here. And they usually only crow in the AM if they...
Sounds cool They can definately shelter into part of the barn where we keep the straw; there is always enough on the floor to burrow into. They are currently using a saddle rack (about 6 feet off the ground) as a roost..
I am concerned. I live up in NY, and winter is on its way. How should I provide for my roosters? I have 2; a RI red and a white. They are inseperable. Now, they spend their nights in the barn (unheated, 2-horse stall barn.) I know that obviously I need something to keep their water thawed out...
My possible Rhode Island roo scaled a 4' stall wall yesterday and ended up in the next (empty) stall. His buddy was mad but we got him back in the right place pretty quick; I was surprised but I think that he jumped onto the edge of the big 20g horse waterer bucket-thingie in there and used that...
I have alfalfa hay here for the horses. Would the roos eat it is I tossed some in with them? I read that they eat plants and greenery and am wondering if they would like this.. there is so much to learn!
Another thing: I know that they like to scratch around for their feed. I have a bird feeder...
I keep my 2 roos in a horse stall with a flat concrete floor. It has good drainage.. now, is wheat straw a good bedding for them? It is not dusy and I use it for the horses. Unlike using hay, they do not eat the straw.. so would the chix eat it? I had them in it overnight and it all still looks...
I know that rhododendrons are poisonous to horses and goats.. I would probably avoid those. Someone correct me please if they are not poisonous to chix!
Yeah; I keep the horses outside 90% of the time and only really bring them in if it is going to T-storm this time of year. So we have a few weeks to build something. I made a cage, but it is woefully small and I was thinking we were getting small bantams; not these mega guys So for now things...
I know that chix can basically hover and jump/fly up short distances. How well can your basic larger types fly? (meaning, like my rooster in my avatar?) I know that our bantam hen can fly into tall trees! Can these bigsters fly that high/well?
Here they are! We were going to get some more from the city that were rescues, but the neighbor ended up eating all of them.. kinda scary when you consider the drugs they give those things..
Anyway, here goes! These boys were owned by my friend for awhile now and are actually inserperable. They...
Thanks I wanted it small for now, because the hens we are getting were from a place where they were in tiny cages. I only plan on putting 2 in here. I think that for safety, I will use the heavy-gauge hardware cloth or maybe hog wire to go around it. It is in the barn now.
I made this little coop last week, before doing much research. I thought that I needed something right away, but the chickens were not brought home yet. I know that it needs reinforcement to keep out predators and snakes.. what I am thinking, is to build something better and just use this as a...
