    Geese for Newbies

Well I am so amazed that I have come in to this thread because my local animal control called me this afternoon that someone reported a goose at the lake and they had picked it up because it had a broke wing and would not let people out of their car. So they brought him to me because they...

A coop built with the floor made of hardware cloth? Dh wants to do it like that......

https://www.backyardchickens.com/image/id/5 My floor is a metal grate 3 sheets that we got a local recycle center. My coop is 2 feet off of the ground and in the winter months I enclose around it with haybales to block the wind. But in the summer with temps over 100 most days for over 2...

A Compost Arena & My New Hampshires...

ours do - all the weeds we pull, garden clippings and fruit/veggies that we did not get picked and stuff that I have grown for them along with whatever else out of the yard into. It does not stay in a pile so we have it in a cinder block framed area that contains what they scratch around. They...

    Chick starter vs. Layer

ok thanks for all the info - I do keep food out for them and have even placed a second feeder - It just seems that they need something more. Maybe I will get a bag of Grower and see how they do with that.

    Chick starter vs. Layer

Ok then it is off to TSC! Thank you so much! I have never used Grower but it sure seems that they need something else to get them full. This is my 4th time with babies and have been so surprised at the amounts these girls have eaten. They run me over when each time I go out to the baby coop...

    Chick starter vs. Layer

I have 5 12 to 13 week old chicks. I am out of the chick starter and not sure if I can go ahead and switch over to the layer now or to buy another bag. I usually switch them over at 14-16 weeks but these little girls have consumed a lot more than what my babies have in the past. The bag did...

    Coop size and adding chickens

My 2 roos get along just fine. They each have 15 hens. The all roost together in the same 10 x 12 coop. They do have 2 acres of free ranging during the day and the rooster each have their own part of that 2 acres. The hens to switch back and forth between the 2. I think which ever one has...

Help! Just ordered new chicken coop! Now need advice on what are best laying hens!

Being in Texas and having those long hot, humid summers we tend to have lots and lots and lots of mosquitoes! During the day they don't seem to bother them as much but during the night when they are out and the windows to the coop are open I have had several outbreaks over the years of Fowl...

The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

I have just started using the ACV in the water. Never heard of fermented feed. What is that? She does tend to get into the nest boxes to sleep at night.

The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

I was going to check this out to see if or what anyone might think about worming. I have had chickens now for over 6 years and have never wormed them. They do free range. I have never seen anything or even thought that they might have them. But because I went to the Emergency/medical post to...

Abandoned and Sick Young Cockerel. Please Read<3!

If I where you I would just bathed his eye with some warm water and soft cloth. Hold it on there like a compress a few times a day. I had a hen that had something just like this and I finally got the infection out but took about 2 weeks of bathing it and holding a compress on it several times...

    Vent Gleet or Egg Bound?

Well she has not laid - maybe not egg bound either. She is up talking, eating, drinking. Her bum looked much better this morning. She has pooped a lot but nothing too solid. Was able to clean her up this morning with just a wet, warm paper towel.

    Vent Gleet or Egg Bound?

So maybe that is what I am feeling that kinda moves. It is hard and round. I can not feel anything in the vent itself just this round hard thing I felt right below almost in her tummy. I take that same calcium myself - LOL- old age - so I am going to give that a try. How long can they be egg...

    Vent Gleet or Egg Bound?

Ok thank you so much! I am really hoping that it is egg bound and giving her some warm baths may help. Do worms cause this wet bottom and poo stuck to the feathers?

    Turkey vultures?

We have a "flock" of about 30 Turkey Vultures every winter. It is kinds creepy when they line the ridge vent of the house and our neighbors for their roost, but they have never bothered my chickens or chicks. The roosters don't really like them and do tend to send a warning growl out when they...

    Vent Gleet or Egg Bound?

I clean the poop board every evening when I gather the eggs. I have never really seen anything that would look like a worm. I did check out the "Poo" pictures. My birds have always been glossy, active, and healthy. Just this one bird is a puzzle to me as I have not seen this kind of problem...

    Vent Gleet or Egg Bound?

Would I see these worms? I have never treated my flock for worms. I have 30 hens. They free range and all seem fine other than this one. I have had chickens now for about 6 years.

    Vent Gleet or Egg Bound?

Thank you for the link for the Vent Gleet. She only has a few of the symptoms but the main ones that I can see are not there - smelly poop, crop, black waxy substance. The poop is not firm - she did just poop - but not liquid either. It did not smell bad when she pooped.

    Vent Gleet or Egg Bound?

I have bathed and dried her. She is in a large cat crate at the moment. She can stand and turn around but not a lot of room. If she needs to stay in longer then I have an extra large dog crate. I did try to lubricate the vent and tried to feel around but could not feel anything other than...
