Yeah production is down here as well. Short days and first hard molt are the primary reasons here. Production from all the adult hens is down but my EE girls are in full go mode as they just started a month or so ago. As for flight, my wyandottes have short wings and don't do much but the batch...

    Sex- linked Information

WOW! Something new everytime I come here. I was fairly that 2 of the chicks that hatched a couple weeks ago had our Black Australorp as the daddy. I am assuming that he also meets the extended black requirement. My first thought when I saw them was that they indeed looked like little penguins...

    Sex- linked Information

Isn't the Daddy basically an EE? Not certain of the lineage of our EE roo but last hatch of his offspring yeilded 2 spotted heads just like that one which were from Barred Rock hens. I think I am beginning to understand some of this and am watching the latest hatch closely as again there is one...

Yes we are looking forward to that. The first hatch turned out to be re-enforcement of the lesson in genetics which is frequently discussed when talking about sex amd feather linking. EE roo over BR and Leghorn hens made it very evident where the males are concerned. The pullets it isn't as...

We are growing a little at a time. Trying not to let chicken math engulf us. At present we have 5 pens with an average of 9 birds per pen. Added a Nubian milker and a doeling in March so that slowed us down some. Just bred both of them so goat math is also now in play.

Thanks. This is our 2nd broody. Brand new incubator still in the box. The 2 girls from the last hatch should start laying pretty soon. Mixed breeds so looking forward to playing "pullet or cockerel" as well as whose your mama with this new hatch. Roos are Black Australorp and EE.

Persistant broody finally getting it done. Tried a couple times to break her but she has been insistant since mid August. Finally the summer heat started to abate, got her moved into a proper brood pen, gave her some fresh eggs to work with and today she finally succeeded. She is sitting a full...

True predators generally will take their prey and go. Mass death is more often done by a canine because they seem to kill more for sport.

When do chickens start laying eggs?

The BSLs thru their first season of laying have been very consistant, even prolific and the eggs have been very nice. They make up 2/3 of our origional pen. I kept a log and thru the winter we averaged 17+ eggs a day from a pen of 22 layers, 16 of which are BSLs.

When do chickens start laying eggs?

It is hard to tell. In the pen of 14 Black Sex links, 2 Production Reds, 1 Amberlink, a Silverlaced wyandotte and an EE, the EE is tge only one we are sure isn't. In the truly mixed flock pen, the Barred Rocks lay huge eggs with the Leghorns running a close second. Both lay in the ex-large to...

10 weeks now EE roo over White Leghorn hen. Been crowing since 6 weeks 5 days. Starting to show proper feathering for a roo. Same hatch EE roo over BR hen 1 big bright comb, upright tail but no real signs of hackle or saddle that I see. The other EE roo over BR has smaller, paler comb with...

    Goat Thread!

Hi everyone. Just thought we would introduce ourselves to the goat group. We found BYC last year when we got our first 3 chicks which chicken math quickly took control of and now 14 months later we have 4 pens, 50 birds. This past March we decided we wanted a milk goat so we purchased a 75%...

The chickens are all in covered pens and the goats have the run of most of the rest. Too many loose dogs around us to let chickens run loose. We are considering adding Nigerian dwarfs because for a couple of reasons. 1 is size. Our 2yr old Nubian is around 140# and her 7 month doeling is about...

How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

Hahaha, all of ours are in covered enclosures and we can hear a pair of crows up in the big salt cedar lamenting their inability to access eggs.

Most if not all our birds like basil, especially the Thai Basil, and rosemary. They pretty much went for any/all green herbs when they were fresh. Oregano and thyme also seemed to go over well wity them. We added a Nubian milker amd her doeling to the area in March so this year we didn't do herbs

How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

Congrats on first hatch. We got our first hatch of 5 almost 7 weeks ago from Colleen, our year old GLW. She has nurtured all 5 she hatched to this point and dropped her first egg yesterday since going broody, the same day that we heard the first crow coming from the babies. They are in an...

They are one of the few creatures that are able to handle tge formic acid that ants produce. That pic is of 2 of the 3 that were together that particular morning, mating season. Generally I will see them alone and sitting on the entrance of a harvester ant colony, lapping up ants.
