They still have them in stock in Santee.. Or should I say, they did as of last weekend. Not sure about the price, but I would make the assumption that it'd be the same price.

    The chicks hate the bucket......

They are about a month old. I don't think they have much waste. The stuff they do knock about they seem to clean up. Or at least when they were in the brooder and the kooky chicks would stand on the edge of the feeder and kick the food about (??????????), I don't see them doing anymore in the...

    No more light/heat......

Thanks for the input. That tells me I have been babying them a bit too much. I thought that might have been the case. I'll wean them off the heat and toughen'em up!! What about lighting? Do I need to wean them off slowly with a dimmer over a few nights instead of just turning off the light...

    The chicks hate the bucket......

Yeah they do seem to be pretty dense... I'm hoping they warm up to us a bit more as time goes by. Whacky chicks. I'll keep trying with the bucket. See if I can convince them its awesome. Maybe they need a sign pointing to the holes that says "Food Here". :)

    The chicks hate the bucket......

a white plastic bucket. ;) Similar to the other bucket systems out there with a PVC 90 (5 of them as I have 14 chix) or so cut/glued into place so there is a 1/2-3/4 on the bottom to allow feed to be eaten/fill the gaps. The holes are big enough for all the chicks without going to big that...

    No more light/heat......

My chicks are about a month old. We kicked the stinkers out of the house to the coop a week or two ago and have been running light & ceramic heater to keep them warm at night. I figure I can slowly taper off the heat now, but was curious how cold should I let it get in the coop while they are...

    The chicks hate the bucket......

Because of the tiny size of the brooder (one of those rubbermaid style totes), I didn't want to fill it up with a bucket feeder straight off, so I waited until I got them in the coop to switch them to the bucket feeder and they hate it. Well maybe not hate it, but I put it in there a few days...

How do feed stores make money on chicks.. Or do they?

Yeah but I bet the profit margin on the feeder is higher than the dozen bantams. ;)

How do feed stores make money on chicks.. Or do they?

Thats hilarious. Is it extremely obvious? Brown floor with fluorescent yellow footprints or something?

How do feed stores make money on chicks.. Or do they?

Do feed stores make any money on baby chicks? Or is it just a loss leader to get you in the door hoping you will buy feeder/waterer/food/etc... and be a returning customer? When some places are selling the chicks for $3-$4 and the online hatcheries are selling them for $2-$2.50 in quantity...

Chick Heat - Lowering the temp...

So we got some baby chicks this weekend and I've been trying to get the temperature right for them. After the first night we moved them out of the garage to the inside which made a huge difference on the temperature fluctuations (not so much a positive impact on the smell of the house though!)...

    Current Hardware Cloth/Welded Wire Pricing

No free shipping from Menards and the shipping cost looks to be the same price as what I'd save on the sale price.. Looks like Zoro is still my best option.

    Current Hardware Cloth/Welded Wire Pricing

Im in the same boat as you. Just got my peepers yesterday and need to finish the coopNrun in the next week or two. I was looking for about a week trying to find the best price on hardware cloth because I am going to cover my coopNrun in it and didn't want to take a loan out! :) Best price I...

Hello fine chicken folks in San Diego. We are going to start our little backyard flock tomorrow. Picking up a few sexlinked chicks to guarantee eggs, but we are thinking about getting a variety of chix for a variety of egg colors and looks. Looking to get some Easter Eggers to get some...

Santee. Just down the road from EastCountyFeed. Was in there the other day (in the area, they had super cheap propane) and they didn't have chicks at the moment. They said there would be more in soon. Any suggestions on good layer breeds that are friendly for east county? Thats the next ...
