Anyone near Brookville, PA with turkey?

I plan on getting some eggs or little ones this spring to raise instead of meat chickens this year. Anyone out there from my area (Jefferson County, Pennsylvania) who could help me out? I am not stuck on any specific breed at this time. If you can help me out please send me a message.

    Chickens removing nesting material

For some reason, my hens have started pulling all of their nesting materials out of the nest and scattering the eggs around the coop. Any ideas why in the world they would be doing this? I have tried straw, wood shavings and shredded news paper, all scattered out.

    Spring Cleaning time!!!

Just finished cleaning and freshening up the coop. I decided to pass on cleaning the run out since it was starting to sprinkle. I am glad I stuck with a small coop, I can't imagine having a large flock and room sized coop and the poo to go with it. Of course being a composter, now I need some...

I think I would like to give Turkey a try this year, how much would I expect to pay for hatching eggs or polts. I would really like some Royal Palms, but would consider another breed for my first try at them.

Anyone have plans for a shut off float for a waterer?

I have been trying to work out a cheap float for a watering system I want to build. My plan is a section of gutter, downspout into a large bucket or small barrel with a trough inside of the coop. They have one at TSC, but I don't want to spend the $10.00 for it. Anyone with plans, or better...

I am no longer a dog person

I use to love dogs, but today when we got home there were two dogs going after my rooster, that changed my perspective on dogs. They managed to get ahold of him from outside the run and pull him right through the chicken wire. The worst part was that my daughters saw the whole thing. My 8...

My first try at a Tractor

I am looking for honest critique on this one. I spent a long time putting it together, mostly because I only had a little time each week to work on it, but I think it came out O.K. I do have plans for adding a small access door to put the feed and water in a little easier. I borrowed a system...

What Breeds are considered for Fly Tying

Any Fly tyers out there? I have considered getting a couple birds for hackle feathers, but not sure what breeds fit this category. I have some friends who tie flies, and I fly fish, so I had the thought, if I raise a couple birds to give them neck and saddle hackle, they could do the work to tie...

We just had our daughter's birthday party, we have lots of left over cake. Is it too sweet for the chickens? I figure taking the icing off and giving them some cake would be fine, but I wanted to check.
