Thanks! Final score is 19 chicks! Very cute and now tearing about the brooder! It's been fun taking part in the hatchalong. Best of luck to everyone still in mid-incubation or hatching
It's day 21 for me and so far 11 chicks have hatched. Hopefully more to follow in the next 24 hours. All are Marans - Wheaten, Copper Blue, Splash, and a single Copper Black
You mean on to the eggs themselves?
The incubator is almost full or I would use an additional container of water in the basket beside the eggs. As it is the cloths draped over the water channels are working ok - just need to keep the water channels full as I'm evaporating water quite...
Mine are in lockdown for a Wed/Thurs hatch! Tough getting the humidity up where it needs to be in my Octagon 20 at this time of year but managed to get it over 60% using some cloths draped over the sides of the water channels to create a bit more surface area.
Day 13 of incubation for the Marans eggs and things a bit clearer (maybe not the best choice of word but never mind! )
Candled them again and found 2 clears in the 24 eggs. So....full steam ahead to the big hatch day a week on Thursday for me!
Yep - the pic isn't the best but there are definite veins to be seen. 24 chicks is a few more than I had bargained for! There's bound to be fewer than that I suspect but maybe this is going to be my first ever 100% hatch!
7 Complete days of incubation so time for candling. I had forgotten how difficult it is to candle Marans eggs. So....the upshot of it is there are no obvious clears in the 24 eggs. That's not to say I'll get 24 chicks but you never know! I'll try again in 7 days when things should hopefully...
I suspect it'll be a few fewer after candling but hopefully plenty of little feathered leg beauties in a couple of weeks. Incubator is an old style Brinsea Octagon 20 with auto turn cradle that has served me very well for nearly 10 years. Of course it helps to learn how your own incubator works...
Thanks! We still have some of those ones from the video. Some of them were cockerels and a few including the sweet little white leghorn boy became psychos and had to go to the great chicken coop in the sky!
Thanks for the kind words Michael. I'm sure you have some beautiful country in your neck of the woods as well :)
I'll definitely check out the Learning Centre (apologies - Scottish spelling!). BYC is a great resource in so many ways.
Hi all
Just joined and have posted a couple of times already but I thought I'd introduce myself anyway. I'm Gerry and I live in lovely Speyside here in North East Scotland. We've had chooks for nearly 11 years with breeds of all sorts over the years ranging from rescue battery hens to La...
Speaking from experience if you hang on to them there'll come a time you'll be very glad to be rid of them - whether rehoming or into the pot. Cockerels can become anti-social really quickly as they mature. Two months old cockerels and year olds are very different creatures!
That's a shame.... It just means you'll have to set more Marans eggs now though! We've had Copper Blues and Splash Marans in years gone by and they're lovely productive birds with a great temperament. We have a couple of La Bresse Gauloise hens and some Legcanas (leghorn/Araucana crosses) but...
My first post and I thought I'd take the plunge in a hatch-along! I set 24 Marans eggs yesterday with a due hatch date of the 25th. 12 are Wheaten Marans and 12 are Copper Blue Marans (which should give some Splash marans chicks as well). Love getting the incubator going for the first time in...
