Hmmmm, I get my birds from a local person who has all his breeds separated because he only sells quality purebred chicks. He is registered with the Texas Animal Health Commission and PT tested (diseased free) by Texas AM. These two came out of the same run from a handful of others that all...

Adding new birds to the flock?

I have an 11 week old flock that was raised together consisting of 8 hens and 1 rooster. I am trying to add two EE's that are probably about 6 weeks old. I have had them in the coop in a dog kennel for two weeks now and I let them free range in the evenings with the flock. The flock is NOT...

Thank you, I'll get better pictures as the weeks go. They do not like being handled at all unlike my other birds. Right now, just trying to integrate them into the flock and that is not going so well.

    Got sand? You should!

For now I have pine shavings in the coop, but I went to sand in the run about 2 weeks ago. It was the best thing I ever did!! For now I am using the quikcrete all purpose sand from Home Depot or Lowes. I went to petco and got a litter scooper with an extender arm, lol. So, so easy to clean!

When do Roos have to go?

I do believe I have all the other roosters gone now! I had multiple crowing and just sparring happening at 7-8 weeks. I knew I had to move! I think I have 8 hens and then the leghorn roo now and the flock is happier already. Personally I would have kept the buff or RIR roo, but I let the hubby...

When do Roos have to go?

5 of the supposed roosters went back to where they came from. He turns around and sends them to auction. We ended up keeping the white leghorn.

    *Buff Orpington Thread!*

3 of the 4 buffs I have. These are the 3 I believe are roosters and probably why they are not with the rest of the group.

    Light

I should end up with 8 hens and 1 possible rooster if we keep him. The rest are going soon. Maybe this weekend... Yes, I want the ladder aspect. The 6 nesting boxes dont take any of that 4ft space. They stick out the side and are supported underneath. I'll have to try both ways to see if long...

    Light

Is it okay to change roost location eventually? Does that mess with their pecking order and cause problems because they have to readdress who will sit where? Right now the laying boxes are closed off so the 3 roost poles are lower and going across which means there are 3 at 4 ft long. When we...

    *Buff Orpington Thread!*

I have 14 chickens of which 4 are buffs. Of those 4, I think 3 of them are roosters and will probably be the ones hitting the road. This photo is the one buff who is crowing at 8 weeks old!
