Blood in eggs and other crazy eggs, help!

Thanks for your reply! I have the Chicken health handbook and I agree. We have never had respiratory illness that I know of. Your story gives me hope that she'll pull through. I don't mind if she never lays again. I've already given her a course of not food safe antibiotics meant for pet...

Blood in eggs and other crazy eggs, help!

My 2 year old Lace Wyandotte didn't really start up laying with the rest this spring. She is a nervous bird, would often just lay her eggs on the coop floor. Fast Then she had a dust up with a hawk where she lost a few feathers. Then she laid a fairy egg with no yolk. A couple weeks later and...

    chicken bullying

I need some advice. I had two groups, 4 and 3 more. They were 3 months apart. They integrated pretty well. The older 4 were always on top. After 14 months of living together they basically starved the bottom to death before I noticed. I always had multiple places to eat, the free range about 6...

    Thin egg shells

I've a had a this shell/ thin spot problem with my 1 y.o. Black austrolorp almost from the beginning. I do all the recommendations for calcium. Including bringing her in once a week for bone powder mixed in a spoon full of yogurt. Sometimes 1 egg comes out sort of normal. They all have a flat...

    Molting with no bald spots?

I noticed 2 hens with small bald spots on the side of their necks. 1 year old. Could this be a molt starting, or another chicken picking?

    BYC members in Massachusetts?

Definitely segregate them! My older hens did their best to try and murder the new ones last spring. Do some reading about introducing new ones to the flock. They young ones need to be I think at least 4-5 months to hold their own. Good luck! Sorry for your losses.

Definitely start small! They lay better if they have plenty of room. I also part-time free range.

How do you tell if your chickens are fat?

Her eggs are always odd. Bulges, thin spots, cracks that healed over, one flat side, splashed with brown, speckled, or totally ivory. Very large but long ovals.

post your chicken coop pictures here!

Lovely job! I'm in MA so I know you must be buried right now. You can put some posts up and cover with clear corrugated platic so sun gets in but stays dry. That's what I did - important to provide a place to dust bath in the winter too. You can add wood ash to help with mites etc too. We have a...

post your chicken coop pictures here!

Some types of wood are bad for chickens, I would suggest google it. I switched to Koop Clean- more $$ but lasts so much longer and no smell. Very easy to scoop poop.

    Egg issue

Its been going on for a couple months! Today she laid one that was flat on one side, but at least no cracks. Her eggs are always a pale color and longer then the others, but each with different spashes of brown and speckles. It's very strange.

    BYC members in Massachusetts?

My first winter too. I have run a cord out for a heated dog bowl in the run. We wrapped the run in clear tarp securely so they don't get wind and the run is dry and they have been fine. It does get good sun during the day. I open the run everyday to let them peek or come out and free range...

My 3 EE's hatched June 9, followed your dates almost exactly! They all squatted right before laying. After the first started laying, it totally changed the pecking order too.

    Egg issue

My 10 month old Black Australorp always lays eggs with a thin cracked and healed area. Sometimes it's a band/ bulge around the middle, like the bottom left. Sometimes it's one spot. Today it looked like it almost broke! There is plenty of oyster shell available free choice, and mixed in to one...

Advice/Help Needed - Bright Green Poop

I'm having the same issue with my 9 month old RIR. Just noticed today, a watery poop while I was feeding kale to everybody , she also wasn't interested. I part-time free range and she also only came out for a minute and then went up to roost. I'd i bring her in will she get used to the warmth...

Trail of butt feathers everywhere she goes

My 8 month old Welsummer is losing the fluffy butt feather. Every time she lays an egg, bunch of feathers, takes a dust bath, her feathers are everywhere. She's got a skinny butt now, no bald spots. It looks like new feathers are coming in, but could she be molting now? It also looks like...

Hum. I'll pay closer attention. My 4 older girls- all lay different shades and I know them. I haven't seen any small pullet eggs. But a couple that I attribute to my RIR have come lightly speckled the last couple of days.

Easter Egger Sexing "tips and tricks" *Pictures Included*

These girls are 6 months. No squatting, no sign of laying. My other girls, assorted breeds were laying by 4-5 months. Is it because they came of age in November/December? Will they wait till spring? I don't use a light, but the roof of the coop is clear polycarbonate.
