And mama hen has them outside. I'm so worried that the babies will get chilled. Anyone have some practical advice short of chasing them down and locking them up inside?

    Egg Incubation Services

Has anyone heard of egg incubation services? I am thinking of trying to offer service for folks who would like to have specialty breed hatched for them rather than buy them at a hatchery. I'm wondering if there is a market for this kind of service and what it would be worth. Any ideas?

If I take the chicks will the broody go back to "normal?"

I have a broody with 3 chicks under her, but she's not doing a great job of mothering them. Can I just take the chicks away from her? Or do I need to cage her or something?

Can 2 broodys get along in the same space?

I have 2 broody hens, they are just about ready to hatch. I was hoping to move them with their babies to the floor of the chicken coop. They would share a space of about 14 sq ft. Does anyone know if this is OK to do or not?

Looking for a good egg development book

HI, I'm a homeschooler and am looking for a good book about chick development during incubation. The only books I can find are either early readers geared towards 5-6 year olds or college level embryology texts. Does anyone know of a book that is at around a middle school level?

Hatching around April 6th looking for buddies

I set 40 eggs last night: silver laced wyandottes, bearded silkies, orpingtons, and easter eggers. 10 eggs under a broody and the rest in my homemade incubator. This is my 3rd hatch but I'm still feeling clueless. I am already constantly worried about checking on the temp in the incubator and...

    Suggestions for moving Broody hen

I have a first time broody hen that I tried to move tonight. When I put her in the new nest she decided to take her daily constitution so I let her out to roam around and eat. When she was done and I brought her back to her new nest, she was desperate to get away and wants to get back to the...

Can you give fish guts and heads as a treat?

Was hoping some of you have some wisdom about whether or not it is safe? My son likes to bring home fresh catch from the pier down at the beach. He gave them the guts this afternoon and they gobbled it all up. Haven't given the heads yet. Any opinions?

tell me how your kids handle eating chickens that used to be pets.

The excellent discussion on the thread below about why people slaughter and eat chickens has really gotten me thinking about the benefits of using our chickens as food when they pass laying age. I am looking for ideas on how to convince my children that this is a good idea. Right now, my kids...

black spots on comb and wattles

Hi, I was wondering if someone knows what might be causing spots on my chickens? You can see what looks like white powder on the combs and wattles. A strip of black on the wattle and a black spot on one of the teeth of her comb. It just doesn't look right to me. I tried to wash off the black...

    is gypsum safe for chickens?

I was hoping someone could tell me if I use gypsum on my lawn, will it be safe for my chickens to be out? The garden center said it was a natural organic treatment to help the hard pan clay soil that we have. I'm hoping to get my grass to grow a bit better since my girls mow it down so quickly...

    laced wyandottes

Hey BYCers. I am looking to add a few chicks to my flock. I have 2 BOs and one RIR that are 3 months old. I'd like to add a few wyandottes because I've read that their personalities are docile and quiet. Can anyone recommend where I should buy a small order of silver, golden or blue laced...

When are they old enough for scratch?

I have 10 week old chicks and I'm running low on their feed. I want to stretch it out some until their I can pick up the next bag of feed. Can I give them a little scratch yet? Or are they too small? And what about stuff like broccoli stems? or pumpkin seeds? Are these things to tough for them?

reusing old materials for coop - is mold a problem?

Hi, I wanted to ask what you all think. I'm finishing my coop and recycling some old sheet goods that smell moldy, it's the kind of moldy smell that laundry gets when you leave a wet load in the machine for a few days and forget to take it out. (not that that's ever happened to anyone else but...

I woke up this morning to the sound of high winds and trees bending over. I'm thinking the babies (8 week old chicks) need to stay in their coop today. What would y'all do?
