My hens aren't pretty anymore! :((

I have a flock 7 of chickens, 2 Barred Rock hens, 4 Rhode Island Reds and one Lakenvelder Rooster. They are all the same age and came in the same group in April 2012 from the hatchery. This is my first flock with a rooster, the only reason I have this one is it was a “free exotic breed” sent...

    Lakenvelder Rooster

Free Rooster - I have a 3 month old Lakenvelder rooster, beautiful boy, free to a good home. He's not human aggressive at all, but he is flighty, just as the breed indicates. He was my "exotic chick" from McMurrays. He is coming along nicely protecting his girls and I really do hate to part...

A New Predator in the Neighborhood- The worst (if you ask me!)

Well, I though I was dealing with a fox, I was wrong. It's a FISHER! About 4:30am this morning I heard a commotion at the hen house. I ran out to see what was happening and yelled "what's going on over there!" and a fisher came running out. As I approached the area, I noticed feathers...

Lone hen outside and seven, 3-1/2 week olds in the brooder

The other day we let our four, one year olds out to free range. During that time, three of the four disappeared. When I looked for them, I found one of them dead and the rest still missing with feathers here and there. Apparently a fox visited while they were ranging at the woods edge. Dang...

Help Identify my Exotic Chick *PIC*

I received an exotic chick from McMurrays and I was wondering if anyone has any ideas as to what kind of chick this is. It's the one with the arrow pointing to it. Sorry I don't have any other views. He/She is light colored on the lower half you can't see, same color as shoulders.

    McMurray's rare exotic chick

I have no idea what kind of rare exotic chick I received. I tried to find it in all the sites with chick pics in them and cannot find this chick. She/he is so unusual...a light yellow underbelly with black topside with white/yellowish wings. A cutie for sure, but it's driving me crazy to know...

Barred Rock, one eye closed, wing hanging-what's wrong?

I have five chickens, one of each- Barred Rock, Red Star, Silver-laced Wyandotte, Cuckoo Maran and Columbian Wyandotte. They are in an 8x12 foot run with a 6x4 foot coop, plenty of room for five chickens, feed and water always available. Never had any problems before. Last night I noticed that...

    How old is your Cockatiel?

Hello everyone, I have heard that Cockatiels can live up to 25 years old. I have a cockatiel that's 17 years old. How old is the oldest cockatiel, does anyone know?

Why has her comb folded over?

My hen Gurty (short for gurtrude) is about 8 months old and her comb folded over, overnight, at about 6 months. Anyone have any ideas what causes that? Is it too big to stand up? And any ideas exactly what breed she is? I was told she's a Columbian Wyandotte, but her comb is straight.

What happened to my orange yolks? They're yellow!

I have a new flock at POL and 3 of 5 are laying. My old flock layed beautiful orange yolk eggs and my new flock is laying yellow yolk eggs. Could it be that they are not getting enough greens? They free-range very little because I lost my last precious chickens to foxes. I'm really worried...

Do I have the right kind of DE?

I purchased a big bag of DE at TSC. I asked the girl if it was food grade and she said yes it was so i bought it. I have never bought or even seen DE. Is it supposed to be so fine? It looks and feels like ashes. Do I have the right stuff? I hope so, I've already spread it around in the coop...

    From one to three!

I came home from work lastnight and started with my usual routine; Check on the hens, fill water containers, check their feeder, feed them a snack (usually scratch) and check for eggs. All five of my hens are about 28-30 weeks old and only one, my red-star (I know it was her because of her comb...

Surprise! Cuckoo Marans instead of Ply Barred Rock?

Can someone tell me when Cuckoo Marans usually start to lay? I have two that, according to the seller, were Plymouth Barred Rocks and are about 25-28 week old. They turned out to be Cuckoo Marans (white legs) and I wouldn't be surprised if they were a little younger than stated . Their combs...

    Light Sussex or Columbian Wyandotte

About a month ago I purchased 7 pullets. They were supposedly almost ready to lay, none of which have. When I purchased them it was a mix of different breeds (I think she purchased the 25 brown egg layers). One of the chickens is all white with a black colored hackle and a little dab of black...

    Coop location & water source

Can anyone tell me how far away my coop should be from my drilled well? I have an area I would like to use, but it's pretty close to my well. Any ideas? Sorry for the double post!

2 with white legs 1 with yellow?

I have three Barred Rock pullets (4 mo old). Two of them I just purchased have white legs, and my other BR has yellow legs. Can anyone tell me why they are different? Different breeders? I know mine came from my pet chicken and the newer chicks came from McMurray. Any ideas? thanks! Kim

Would stone dust be good for dust baths?

I have some stone dust left over from the pool I'm having installed and would like to use some of it for the chickens to dust bathe in. Does anyone know if this would be okay for the chickens? they are 7 weeks old...

    Problems Viewing Photobuckets

I can view some of the pictures, but the photobucket photos don't come out (show). All I get is a big box with an X in the left hand corner. I tried clicking on the box, clicking on the X and nothing works. This happens at my home computer as well as my work computer. I would love to see...

Two thin hens and two fat hens???

I have four RIR hens, two of which are a few pounds thinner than the other two. The other day I picked up my hens one at a time to put them back in their run and I noticed there was quite a difference in weight between them. The thinner two don't seem to have a protruding breast bone and are...
