    Travel with chicks??

Ok, here's a question- just received my day old babies (yay!) and was planning to travel to PA for long weekend July 4th. I was going to have M-i-L watch them at her house, but would it be do-able to bring them along instead, in their brooder? (So they'd be sure to get the attention they...

Is my silkie sick, or...? Unusual behavior after broodiness

So I've finally (again) broken 2 of my silkies of their broody behavior. I let them out to freerange with the others today, and noticed one of them just standing there, not pecking, not eating. I managed to catch her and gave her a quick once-over. No apparent injury, crop appears to be...

Scared the eggs out of her??

4 of my feathered friends were closed out of the coop last night, as the auto door closed early because of overcast skies. I went out to check on them @ 10pm, and 3 were huddled on the ramp, 1 was on a stump roost. (the run is all enclosed, so they were safe, at least) They looked very scared...

    The first egg!

I noticed my 16 week old Speckled Sussex, Bella, pacing and going in and out of the coop this afternoon. I put a dishpan with a couple of fake eggs and some hay in the coop - sure enough, she settled down into the pan, pushed the 2 "eggs" underneath herself, and was throwing hay onto her back...

Is 1 bag of medicated chick starter enough?

I am just about through our 25# bag of medicated chick starter (6 standards, 3 silkies - ~ 4 wks old) Can I give them the regular(ie non-medicated) feed now? Was the medicated for the first month good enough to protect them when they most needed it...? Thanks for your help!

    Is this the crop?

On one of my week and a half old chicks, I noticed what seemed to be a "bulgey" right breast - kind of soft/squishy to touch. Deflated this afternoon. My Italian mother-in-law called it the stomach - is this the crop? I checked on the anatomy pic and didn't see it identified anywhere...

    Question on Socializing Baby Chicks

We received our peeps this monday 4/12 - How much should we be handling them to accustom them to us - we are aiming for family friendly birds. I check them a few times a day for pasty butt, etc, but they are seeming more skittish than ever, at @ 3 days old. Should we handle them more at this...

Help! 2day old silkie w/pasty -not resolving!

One of my silkies had pasty butt this am when I checked on them - I think I got all the poop off - I had to actually soak her little butt in some warm water- She has passed a tiny bit of white poop(just poked out), but it still looks like she's straining to poop. The vent looks cleaned off, but...

    Guinea pig food?

I got an awesome homemade guinea pig cage I'm going to use for a brooder - I also got along with it quite a bit of guinea pig( food )pellets. Should I just pass these along to a guinea pig owner, or is this something the chickens (when they get a little older) can eat? (Just found a great chart...

    Rhododendrons ok for chickens?

I'm going to start building the L'Oeuf Shak this weekend (yay!) I cut down some large gnarly rhodendrons to make room for the coop and run. I left a good-sized stump in the ground so they have a natural roost/jungle gym in the run area. There are also a lot of small rhododendron plants...

Should we rethink pallet coop construction...?

I am always the first to think reduce, reuse, recycle, but just received some new information recently... I was phoned by an environmental group re contaminated pallets - a little quick google showed up this information, which I never even thought about...This is about burning pallets, but this...

    To vaccinate or not?

After reading some posts here I'm not sure I made the right choice... I opted to not vaccinate the chicks I ordered that are due to be shipped April 12. I'm not a big vaccine proponent for us humans (eg flu, H1N1), so I figured go organically, and not vaccinate the tiny chicks against Mareks...

Coop Construction Question (time is of the essence:-)

I will be constructing a coop this spring for a new flock-to-be. I am trying to re-purpose as much materiel as possible - so a quick question. Can wallboard be used as the inner walls of a coop? Painted, of course. This would be a framed coop with 3/4 - 1/2" plywood outer walls, with...

Greetings all! I am new to BYC, and not even a fledgling chicken owner yet! I will be getting some chicks in the spring - thinking about a Silver Wyandotte, Speckled Sussex, an Easter Egger, Jersey Giant, and a Barred Rock or Dominique. And a couple of little Silkies for my daughter...
