    Kids Playhouse Coop

Right now I have 6 hens and 1 Rooster in the 6x6 coop. They all roost together. I will be using the second coop as a broody house for this coming springs hatch. I have a temporary divider to separate the pen. It's worked out really well.

Just finished coop but have a couple questions...

At about 8 weeks I started placing them on the roost, they would jump back down and sleep in a dogpile on the floor. After 3 days of me placing them, they started to roost on their own. Block the nest boxes until laying age. They can be taught and usually after just a few days of repetitive...

    Any ideas?

We use under the bed Rubbermaid bins. They are shallow but hold shavings and come in several lengths 2', 3', 4'.

Going to build a self cleaning coop

Hope to see how it turns out. I would image it would only work in a warm climate but sounds like you have the right conditions to make it work.

Going to build a self cleaning coop

What are the winters like where you are? Chickens are highly susceptible to frostbite in the winter especially their feet and combs. I would be concerned about wet cold rock in the winters when you are trying to use bedding as a way to generate warmth. They can also get bumblefoot from...

Roost bars: Even height or stair-stepped?

Mine are all at one level, the alpha will find her favorite spot & own it!! As long as they have room to fluff their wings out to keep cool in the summer (1+ feet) they'll be fine.

    Clean chicken run?

I'm in MD too!! What kind of bedding do you have in the coop? I use fine pine shavings and clean the poop trays & stray droppings with a kitty litter scoop & bucket. I do the same in the run and clean them both a couple times a week and throw some fresh mint in to keep flies out and everything...

    Neighbors Crowded Coop and run

I would try a face to face conversation before anything else. A note is nice but a face to face conversation goes a long way towards conflict resolution.

    Herbs to keep bugs away?

I grow mint and cut some every few days and throw it in the pen and coop, keeps flies down and it cools them off when they eat it in the summer.

    Chicken shrubs

Most herbs are good and good for them. Depending on your growing zone lavender is great. Mint if you want something that will take over in the spring/summer, it keeps them cool if you feed it to them in the summer & can be cut and put in the coop and pen to keep the flies away & smells good.

    my chicken run/coop smells bad!

If you have access to mint, grow it in a couple of pots. Cut back the tops or pull leaves & put on the poop trays in the coop or under your roost. Flies don't like mint, most pest & mice don't either & as a bonus it smells good. I grow mint for tea and use a ton in the coop and pen to keep...
