Right now I have 6 hens and 1 Rooster in the 6x6 coop. They all roost together. I will be using the second coop as a broody house for this coming springs hatch. I have a temporary divider to separate the pen. It's worked out really well.
At about 8 weeks I started placing them on the roost, they would jump back down and sleep in a dogpile on the floor. After 3 days of me placing them, they started to roost on their own. Block the nest boxes until laying age. They can be taught and usually after just a few days of repetitive...
What are the winters like where you are? Chickens are highly susceptible to frostbite in the winter especially their feet and combs. I would be concerned about wet cold rock in the winters when you are trying to use bedding as a way to generate warmth. They can also get bumblefoot from...
Mine are all at one level, the alpha will find her favorite spot & own it!! As long as they have room to fluff their wings out to keep cool in the summer (1+ feet) they'll be fine.
I'm in MD too!! What kind of bedding do you have in the coop? I use fine pine shavings and clean the poop trays & stray droppings with a kitty litter scoop & bucket. I do the same in the run and clean them both a couple times a week and throw some fresh mint in to keep flies out and everything...
I would try a face to face conversation before anything else. A note is nice but a face to face conversation goes a long way towards conflict resolution.
Most herbs are good and good for them. Depending on your growing zone lavender is great. Mint if you want something that will take over in the spring/summer, it keeps them cool if you feed it to them in the summer & can be cut and put in the coop and pen to keep the flies away & smells good.
If you have access to mint, grow it in a couple of pots. Cut back the tops or pull leaves & put on the poop trays in the coop or under your roost. Flies don't like mint, most pest & mice don't either & as a bonus it smells good. I grow mint for tea and use a ton in the coop and pen to keep...

Here's another great free coop option. Seriously, I may rent a U-Haul & go get all of this good stuff.
Not sure I have the hang of copying links here but go to Craigslist, Boston, for sale, free, scroll down a few and you will see 3 life size doll houses for free, 4 x 4 x8. They are awesome!! Wish I could find stuff like that close to me.
