Wanted to share this. When collecting eggs today, my mother and I found a teeny tiny little egg. A 'fart' egg. However, upon cracking it open, we were surprised to find that not only did it have a yolk, but it was a double yolk to boot! I just had to take a picture.
So, I have 1 1/2 year old bantam hen (mix breed). She was doing just fine yesterday as far as I could tell, moving around and eagerly eating with the others, but today she was huddled by the water container and not moving. Her crop is a bit inflated (not overly so, but it is noticeable) and...
So, I have a little Cochin bantam chick that is in need of a name and I find myself grasping at straws for a suitable name. No idea of the gender, but any and all name suggestions will be considered.
Now, this little peep is rather special. It hatched out from under a broody hen with several...
So, today we (my mother and I) picked up a free turkey hen. She was being given away because apparently the owner's Muscovy Duck male was attacking her relentlessly and caused quite a bit of damage. My primary concern at the moment is the large amount of feather loss she has sustained, and parts...
We have one really nice leghorn hen that we got with our original layer flock. My mom loves her so much, last year we decided to get some more leghorns. 11 hens and 1 rooster to be exact. These were purchased from Ideal hatchery. We had hoped they would be similar in personality to our first...
One of my teenage Polish hens (about three months old) went from being lively and jumping to being curled up on the ground as if sleeping, but her neck and head is twisted up underneath her breast and she's jerking his head side to side. I've picked her up and tried to straighten her out, but...
Hello. So, I have a bit of a dilemma. My Muscovy Duck female has decided to lay another clutch of eggs still this year and she's not a very good sitter. She has a history of laying eggs that all end up dying halfway through development. For this clutch I would like to try and incubate them to...

Anyone ever buy chickens from them? I'm looking at some of their more pricey breeds, but I don't want to risk spending a lot of money somewhere without knowing some other customers' experiences.
I have a 3 week old silkie with a swollen foot. I've cleaned the foot and soakef it in warm water with epsom salt. I thought maybe it's Bumblefoot, but I don't know for sure since there's no sore that I can see. It is the only chick with this problem. I've separated it to give it time to...
I'm currently drawing up some coop layouts and need a little help. Square footage is kinda confusing to me. Sorry, but math really just never was my strong suit. Currently, what I've drawn up is a 3 ft wide by 4 ft long walk-in coop (with a run double to triple the size). How many chickens can I...
A follow-up to this thread: https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/dozens-of-dead-and-dying-chicks.1194103/ . My mother and I have noticed that one of the chicks, a cochin bantam, is having serious balance issues. We looked it over and noticed that some of it's once yellow-pink toes have...
This is...well...a bit of a rant post on top of maybe some suggestions as to what I can do. I made two orders of poultry, tallying 110 straightrun (and one rooster), so 111 chicks altogether, between Ideal Hatchery and Welp Hatchery. They both shipped Wednesday this past week, and...
Seems I am using this forum a lot right now. I just got an order from cackle hatchery this morning, and all the chicks (bantams) were alive, but one is acting weird. Can't walk right, keeps falling over, and its head is twisting sideways towards its back. It's chirping a little, but I can't get...
Hello. Currently, there is a massive fire about 15 miles away from where I live, so it's very smokey and very hot. My little cochin hen (she's 4 months old) started wheezing yesterday afternoon. I would have posted sooner, but both power and internet went out and internet didn't come back until...
Hello. I'm looking into expanding my flock into an all out business and have been looking around the internet for information. I have found NPIP, and know it's testing for diseases in the flock, but exactly how the the process go? Do I need my flock all established and grown and laying eggs...
Since it's something I've noted for awhile, and after losing my little rooster yesterday, I have decided to take no more chances with anything regarding my birds. So, I have about a 3 month old Cochin female. She looks healthy, and is active and alert. But...she doesn't sound like a chicken. She...
Today, I learned a hard lesson. Fabric, and the dangers it poses to poultry. Loose threads and string look appetizing to chickens, which can lead to being ingested. If the string is still attached to the fabric, the situation can became deadly. I found my little bantam rooster just a half hour...
Hello. There's probably a thread for Belgian Bearded d'Uccles, but I've only found the one dedicated to the porcelain variety. Apologies if this doesn't belong here.
Anyway, I have this 3 month old mille fleur colored rooster and was wondering if he meets the standard for his breed. If not show...
Does anyone know how to regulate humidity in a incubator you need to pour water inside the tray directly under the eggs? I'm using the incuview https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0198U0XMM/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 . I have 8 days left and my humidity has been going all over...
Hello. So, I live in a very rural area. There's nothing after 200 miles, and no hatcheries or good breeders that I know of. I've already checked the states forum for nearby places to buy chicks. The local farm supply does carry chicks in the spring time, and I know they get them from a breeder...
