First time hatching - what does this look like?

Hi there, Looking for help trying to figure out what this means. Muscovy duck, set to hatch imminently. Have it under a broody chicken at the moment who has successfully hatched many chicks, but never a duck. Is this lighter spot normal? Does it mean internal piping? I can't hear anything...

    What's wrong with my chick?

Hi all, We had a chick hatch a few days ago and all seemed fine. He is with his mom and is currently the only chick. We came home from work and checked on him only to find his eye is black and closed. What is wrong? What can I do?

Muscovy sitting on both duck and chicken eggs

Good morning fellow Backyard Chicken Owners! I am turning to you as I have a few questions. A little background to add context to my question: My flock consists of: 4 adult Wyandotte hens 2 adult Barred Rock hens 1 adult Red Sex Link hen 1 white silkie "frizzle" rooster 4 adult silkie hens...

Raccoons killed my two momma hens

My husband got two of them, that same night. I haven't let any of my chickens out of the coop or the run. Poor babies. They seem fine now, they huddle together at night and the roo goes from one bunch to the other and checks in on them. I think I'll be good, but damn is it ever scary to...

Raccoons killed my two momma hens

Thanks for this. I didn't have anything set up with heat this time around because they were hatched and cared for by their mom. This region currently has an average high of around 25-27 celcius and lows btw 12-15 celcius, so it doesn't get too cold. My husband didn't see what got them, but he...

Raccoons killed my two momma hens

Last night, before dark, a raccoon came and killed my two momma hens. They were my only two silkie hens and both hatched babies. So now I have 4 1.5 month old teenagers and 6 3 week old babies that have no mothers, with only my frizzle rooster left. Has this happened to anyone? What should I...

    all but one chicken killed

I am so very sorry for your loss. We had 13 silkies last year and we came home to find that a fox had attacked them and there were no survivors. 1 rooster, 2 hens, and 10 babies. I was devastated. I also cried for days. In my grief, I went and bought 3 new silkies that were about 1 month old...

    Sadness on the farm yesterday.

I'm so sorry for your loss. We lost all 13 of our silkies to foxes last year and I miss my roo the most. They can be such great protectors.

My chicken's comb was torn off - need help with aftercare!

Hi there, We came home this afternoon and as always, we let our girls out of their run for a few hours of freeranging. One of our red sexlinks (2 years old) came out of the run when we noticed her comb was bright red. When we got closer, we noticed it was all but 2cm torn off! Poor thing! So...

    Help! We have mites.

You both are fantastic! Thank you! We are in a small town 1 hour east from Ottawa. The TSC out here doesn't have anything to help in stock. I'll probably get both - we have a flock of 18 but 4 babies just hatched so it's growing considerably fast. And we can't re-home any of the babies if they...

    Help! We have mites.

hi there - I just recently noticed we have mites - I freaked out of course bc I don't need this affecting my flock! So I researched and I found a few natural recipes to use on both my chickens and my coop http://www.fresheggsdaily.com/2013/02/mites-how-to-prevent-them-and-treat.html?m=1 I did...

@BirdGirl2004 also, my silkie hen has been glued to her nest going on day 6 now. Fingers crossed I might get one to hatch! I'm sorry you're having a difficult go at it. It'll happen eventually!

@BirdGirl2004 she actually adopted these little guys when they were 3 days old. :) We don't have a rooster for my big hens (we currently only have a silkie rooster and he's too small to get near the big girls). We're very lucky she took to them so effortlessly!
