    Egg laying, two years?

My original chickens are about 3 years old and egg production has been down for a while now. I saw this coming so I got a new flock in a separate coop from my original flock. I processed my meat chickens, kill deer and sent the pigs to the butcher. For some reason I think I am going to have to...

I have guineas and chickens together and they get along fine. The guineas are very very loud sometimes and tend to wander alot more than chickens do.

    The price of a hen........?

I just bought a new flock of 10 here in Maine off craigslist just starting to lay for $10 per bird and I probably could have got them for less but figured $10 was a price I was willing to pay.

This little piggie went to the market....

We did pigs for the first time this year. We started with two and just got them back from the butcher a couple of weeks ago. This is the best tasting/quality pork I have ever had and the bacon is better than candy lol. I had a 20' x 20' chainlink dog kennel that I put my pigs in to start and I...

How many times a year do you raise meat birds?

I finished up my first batch of birds last month and the meat is going fast. I am planning on doing another batch of birds to fill the freezer again. I was just curious about how many times everybody else raises meat birds per year. Do you do them all at once or break it up to multiple times per...

    Cost of cornishX

Quote: Haha, I was waiting for that one! To clarify, I sell my birds live- as in, if someone chooses, they can come pick it up before processing. I have a box on my order form that people check if they want it processed. The reason is that there are no laws against selling live chickens...

One of my dogs will not eat chicken organs

I processed all of my cornish x and put them all in the freezer. I saved the organs and feed them to my cats and dogs. My dachshund goes crazy and will devour whatever I put in his bowl in seconds. My pitbull who usually eats everything will not touch the organs. This is very weird to me since...

You have to love Maine weather. I come in here for a few minutes and all of a sudden the sun comes out. Not a bad day after all. I ended up processing 6 birds today and should get the rest done in the morning.

I started processing more birds today until it started pouring on me.

I got all set up and in the middle of the first bird it started to pour. I stood out there and finished the first bird and I got soaked. I hope it stops raining so I can get more done. I would like to be finished with the last 10 birds tomorrow. I am doing this by myself so it takes a while...

I never knew raising meat chickens would be so stressful

Quote: I was going to use West Gardiner Beef for the processing because they are highly recommended by many people I know. Unfortunately there was a miscommunication and I did not realize that they do not start processing chickens until June 5th. They charge $2.85 per chicken. I am glad I...

    Heart attacks need advice

Quote: Don't feel to bad, I lost 9 of my 26 birds from heart attacks and the birds smothering each other. This was my first time and I learned a few things from my mistakes so hopefully there will be less early deaths with my next batch.
